catylitic converter

alright so yesterday someone decided to steal the cat off my car in the parking lot of my work. so i bought a magnaflow CA legal cat and i went to put it on and its too short am i missing a piece? has anyone replaced one on a 95 3.0? help a fellow yota brother out please

xxxtreme22r 11-07-2010 03:52 PM

is it a direct bolt in or was it designed as a universal?

surferkid26 11-07-2010 03:56 PM

its the direct bolt on

xxxtreme22r 11-07-2010 04:02 PM

I am gonna assume they just unbolted your old cat and not cut it out and your flanges are still there? How short is it?

surferkid26 11-07-2010 04:05 PM

yeah they just unbolted it its all still there but i am like 4 inches short when i align the cat up

REDYOTA 11-07-2010 04:19 PM

2 more flanges and some pipe and you could fab a spacer, however more connectors = more oppertunity for exhaust leak, I might would send it back and look for one that matched the length of the oe cat

surferkid26 11-07-2010 04:23 PM

its supposed to be magnaflows oem replacement so im totally lost all the part numbers match and it doesn't look like im missing something from the factory manual. so stumped right now. can anyone send me a picture of their setup? i would appreciate it so much so i can see whats going on.

Is there something about Toyota Catytitic converters that are more desirable for a thief? Last summer on a constructtion site I was working on somebody came during the day and stole the cats off all toyota trucks/4runners in the parkinf log (4 total) and left every other vehicle (around 150) alone. They just cut them out and took off. Why the Toyotas only?

surferkid26 11-07-2010 04:28 PM

i dont know maybe the recycling money = the amount it costs for a nice crack rock or a spoon full of heroine...

REDYOTA 11-07-2010 04:36 PM

perhaps the the muffler and back end exhaust settled or moved rearward with the cat disconnected. Have you tried pulling it towards the cat? The cat is the only part that fits between the the flange from the manifold and the flange to the muffler.

I'll go measure my cat length and post it as soon as I can to check for spec

17 and 5/8 from end of flange to end of flange

surferkid26 11-07-2010 04:47 PM

yeah the replacement is 17 and 5/8 exactly too. i tried pulling the muffler foreward and didnt steem to get enough but ill double check now. THanks REDYOTA

surferkid26 11-07-2010 05:03 PM

im 3 1/2 inches short between the two with me and my dad moving the muffler foreward

REDYOTA 11-07-2010 05:13 PM

i guess that leaves just one thing, i took the the measurement from a cat off my 95 3.0 pickup and I have no idea if the runner ones are the same. I would figure that they are but they may not be.

Maybe someone can chime in and let us know if the runner and the pickups run the same size converter. If not then thats your prob. If they do run the same size we're back to square 1

surferkid26 11-07-2010 05:26 PM

could be different cause i have the fsm for the pickup but same chassis and engine so i dont think toyota would swap that up

sb5walker 11-07-2010 08:53 PM

There are at least 2 or 3 different models depending on motor, etc. Why not check the magnaflow site - I think they list all the dimensions for the different models:

sb5walker 11-08-2010 12:57 AM

ebay maybe? search magnaflow & part number. Otherwise, not sure but there must be someone selling them to CA residents because I've read posts from several different people in CA saying they installed magnaflows...

REDYOTA 11-08-2010 08:10 AM

legal smegal

REDYOTA 11-08-2010 03:17 PM

They check serial numbers and installation history of cats at emission tests? Never been through one here in ga. I always assumed that if it was on and passed the smog it was ok.

I bought a replacement at a pick n pull for mine and put it in. That wouldnt fly in cali? I guess that would be item I

appologies for the hijack

You find the remedy for your prob surferkid? would like to know the details of the solution.

REDYOTA 11-08-2010 03:23 PM

dang, theft deterrent i presume?

surferkid26 11-09-2010 04:53 PM

talked to smog shops it would be legal to put it on myself and fill out the card but i found a shop that will do it for me 250$ total same magnaflow too and its only 25$ more than what i paid for the replacement so gonna do that plus they will weld it on. but california isnt too smog friendly for anyone who doesnt live here and is gonna move here keep your car registered in that state :)
