Bearing preload

So I might have to (don't know yet) replace my front axle bearings on my 94 4runner, but as long as I take them out I still bump into this problem. The half-crappy Chilton repair manual says something about adjusting the bearing preload to a certain force (not moment), but nothing about how to do it. Can anyone here enlighten me on how to do this?

I'm not sure if it's any different with Toyotas but find out what the torque spec is then tighten it down and loosen the nut just until you can get the cotter pin (GM version) hole lined up, but make sure the axle can still spin freely without any sudden stopping, if it stops soon then loosen up the nut a bit more.

I used these instructions for setting the bearings;

Yep, I use the same tighten-loosen-tighten procedue for mine:

Thanks for the info. Just picked up my Toyota Repair Manual, and that book is CHAMP. Bearing preload is also covered, with pictures.
