Battery discharge light came on!

Well I should have left well enough alone. I washed the engine bay (carefully) and now my battery light and my emergency brake light stay on. DAMMIT! Does this mean I fried my alternator? What does the brake light mean? What else would trigger these lights? 89 4runner 3.0 5speed. Thanks

Take off the battery negative and reset the computer. That's always the first thing I try. Take it off for a few minutes, then reconnect it.

Well I was driving home before and the volt meter started dropping and the truck ran real bad and finally died just before I got into my driveway. So I am left to assume the alternator is shot. Looks original. Anything else it could be?

I dun't tink so... that REALLY sounds like an alternator.

That sucks... my sister had her alternator go out on her while she was driving (original). I'm also voting for alternator. Maybe it's time for an upgrade?

Jeffires 04-28-2006 03:13 PM

Now that I hear the rest of the symptoms, I agree - remove the alternator and have it bench tested.

Upgrade as in a better alternator?

Copied from 1sttoyotaparts.com by Sidney:

If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time. About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for about $5/pair.Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.

Newer/better typically the same thing when buying stuff for your vehicle. But yeah, I'd go for a better one, like one that works. Doesn't have to be new.

Alternator brushes - $5.00 at any auto electrical shop. Get the pre-fab set for $10.00, already in the assembly. You just pull the alt., open the casing, remove the two screws (careful to use the right size screwdriver here), replace the assembly, put the case back on, install and go.
Or, the GSR method will get you through to next month, maybe. GSR = Good, Sharp, Rap - to the back of the alt. Helps to extend the brush life by about 1 week / rap.
