93 4runner sooo lost...

Hey guys always loved toyotas but now I am second guessing myself please help my 4runner regain its respect lol..
Ok so I live in NOVA (Va), and I just bought a 93 4runner with 150k miles for 1500$ It needs front rotors and brakes, no big deal Ill do it. Got the rotors and brakes and a friend with tools we dig into it, not my first rodeo untill I hit the hub, Im like woah the hub is outside the rotors... Call a friend he tells me I need to take the 6 nuts off, and then slam hammer it off, ok np (caliper is off and everything by now) Going good untill I notice the fact one of my nuts and bolts are F**** Im like ********************************** heres a pic please advise!!!! Cut it off, or what? Will it be ok with just 5? Sorry if this is a repost I swear I searched but couldnt find anything like I was trying to figure out so once again I apolagize if this has been asked a gazillion times. |
pound it out and replace it

Well first off you have to take all the cone washers off...They are holding it on. You then can remove the outer hub cover and proceed with the rest of the removal. You will have issues on that one stud though and getting the cone washer off.

Wasnt told about the cone washers.... what are those?
Have to get the hub off to pound it out right? Ok im going to go buy a manual for it off to autozone I go, was kinda hoping I wouldnt need one but eh I wana keep it around for a little while. |

The cone washers are around the smaller studs on the hub cover. Tap on the cover with a dead blow hammer or with a block of wood or something along those lines and they should be hard to find after that. Sooooo keep a close eye on them.

The cone washers can be difficult to remove, especially if they have rusted. The best method is to use a brass bar and a HEAVY hammer. correct? Just picked up the manual about to start reading through it lol thanks for all the help jesh |
I just recently took out some aisins to swap out my add hubs. I read here a while back to get a chisel and try to split the cone washers at the seam......surprisingly it went really well and i removed the hub in about 5 min each side. hopefully i get the same luck taking out the add hub when its time to swap. oh, lube it down with some kind of penetrant. like lensy said they will fly when you pound the hub so cover the hub so you done lose any

Is it true I have to repack the bearings? I have no idea how to do that is it in the haynes manual Im looking but dont see it. |
Well you should...clean all the old grease off and push new into the bearings, it will push out the old in the process. Messy job but you should do this.

oh, and for your original question, yes, in my opinion, it'll be ok with 5 lug studs. i drove mine for 6 years until a week ago until i broke a 2nd one on the same wheel. however, if you're changing the rotor (you won't believe how much work you're gonna have to do to just change a stupid rotor), you're about 30 seconds & $1.50 (literally) from fixing the broken stud, so you might as well do it while you have the rotor off. again, follow my thread that i just got done with yesterday.

I have never owned a vehicle that had the hub outside the rotor when I saw it I knew.... I just knew I was going to want to kick the crap out of it |
its cause its 4WD
best way to get those cone washer heat them with a torch for 10-15 secoonds each then tap with a hammer and they flyy off like pop corn! |

dont know if anyone mentioned this but i found these holes today , like the ones to take out the rear drum.....so i used em and they came right out even faster than the other way i mentioned. took me about 20min to remove and install both sides.....usually things take me longer to do but man was that easy. OH, dont forget to take out the bolt behind the dust cap/cover first...ask me how i know. |

it actually was really easy doing the bolt thing and i see no other reason for those holes than to use it that way. still wondering why the manual hubs dont have someting like that....oh well i had no probs with either.
