86' 5 speed upgrades *pictures* updated often

I thought since I was going to be changing a lot of things on the 86' I just got, I would start a thread... Soon to come will be: custom front bumper, custom rear bumper, 60" Hi-Lift mounts, (possibly) sliders, (possible) Aussie front locker, and an old bed made new. While I"m waiting for transmission parts from Toyota I decided to get started on my custom kick boxes. So here you go!
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/3...2006161dp4.jpg I took my kick panels off and copied them onto 1/4" plywood, cut out a ring for the speaker and supported the ring at the angle I wanted.
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/4...2006178fj6.jpg I covered the box with thick felt (felt actually works better than fiberglass mech netting)
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/5...2006180zc6.jpg After streching the felt as best I could, I pushed in on the center of the ring to smooth everything out and stapled around the edge. that's all for right now, Tomorrow I'll have pictures of the dried boxes (they have wet fiberglass resin on them right now) I will cover the boxes in vinal and install them. more pics to come shortly. cool, i never thought about that i always just chopped up my kick panels and tossed in some 5.5s but nice.

I thought about that, but with an enclosed box you'll get a lot better sound.

Ok, here are a few more pics. I'll put a couple up when I get the boxes installed as well. Hiriden

That looks a whole lote better than my 18 year old self cutting the boards and installing 6"s with a little trimming:pat:

Well it's not to late to change! I've seen lots of people put the speakers really close to the floor. I wanted mine up as high as possible to avoid water/mud etc.

hey im thinking about making some fiberglass mounts 4 my subs i have done previos fiber glass work on boats and i am fairly good, but i am not sure how if i have the capability and also how long did it take you to do that?

Hiridentoyguy 10-04-2006 04:52 PM

It's really not very difficult, it took probably 5-6 hours to make both boxes. I would stick with the heavy felt. All the materials (not including speakers) cost $25 bucks. Hiriden

ok i think i might give it a try i already have alot of fiber glass and resign

bballchrism 10-04-2006 05:07 PM

i think i might give it a try give my truck a realy fancy looking sterio system
was that your first time doing that?

Hiridentoyguy 10-04-2006 05:25 PM

yes, I've made lots of boxes before, but never using this method. I would suggest buying an electic or pneumatic stapler. I have a few blisters from my mechanical one.

bballchrism 10-04-2006 05:44 PM

i think my freinds has one i just borrow his

Hiridentoyguy 10-05-2006 01:03 PM

OK, here's the finished product, I think it looks pretty good, and the speaker from the pass. side is pointing straight at the driver :-)
