33" tires with 5.29 gearing on V6 too high?

I currently have my 1st gen V6 geard 5.29 running 35" tires. I'm thinking about running 33" so it drives a little better on the road. If I run 33" with 5.29's, is that too high of gearing?

What was the effect on fuel economy for you? Also, could you describe your driving, the road (hills?), elevation etc... I'm trying to get a picture of the effect of higher gears on mileage.

I have a 5 speed 3.0 with 4.88's and 31's and it's geared too low for me. I'm going to 33's for my 4.88's. I don't have many hills to worry about though.

Mine is a 5 speed. I believe it could actually help the 3.slow in accelerating and reaching those highway speeds. If 35" with 5.29's put you at stock, how much higher would the RPM would be cruising say at 65 on the freeway?

904_runner 04-17-2009 07:22 AM

Yea have fun going faster than 65 on the highway..

I think at 65mph with 5.29's and 33's i was around 4k rpms.
Around town its awesome. On hills its awesome. on the highway i feel it wasn't too fun

just my $.02

With a mix of around town and highway driving, i was getting anywhere from 17-20.5

It is somewhat hilly here, not too bad. I also drove it kind of hard so i was still getting decent mileage with it.

It may be really low, but this engine does superbly with it like this. I would usually run around 62 or 63 at around 2800-3000 rpm in 5th gear. She did perfectly.

I was getting 300++ miles out of a single tank all the time

What transmission was that? Even if you were in 4th gear (one to one ratio) you should have been around 3500 rpms. 5th gear around 2800 rpms.

Here's a simple gear calculator:

That didn't work for me... it never updated when I changed any of the info

904_runner 04-17-2009 08:47 AM

stock v6 tranny.. r150 i think.

I seem to remember the rpms were unusually high.
That could be a little off it might not have been exactly 4k rpms but it was up there.
I remember driving at freeway speeds and having my motor screaming soo loud it sounded like it was going to pop.. LOL

I can give you exactly what i have now whcih is 3.4L 5.29's and 36s and in 5th gear at 70mph its at exactly 3000rpms.

What ratio, tire size and mph were you wanting, I'll solve it for you.

4.88's 33's and 31's and 70 mph with 5 spd

4th gear is the most accurate with this calculator (4th gear on the 5 speed is the one to one ratio gear)
4.88/33/70 mph = 3478 rpms in 4th, around 2782 rpms in 5th
4.88/31/70 mph = 3703 rpms in 4th, around 2962 rpms in 5th

Sweet! Thanks! :bigok:

mt_goat 04-17-2009 10:32 AM

Those 5th gear rpm numbers will be about 200 rpms too low because that calculator uses .80 over-drive ratio for 5th and the Toyota 5th gear is actually .85.

Keep in mind the big variable is actual tire size vs what is stamped on the side of the tire. Also actual tire size changes as the tire wears out, especially with the big mud tires that sometimes have close to 1 inch of thread. You can take a 33" mud tire down to almost 31" if you wear it down all the way.

hrmm... i'm running 92 3.4v6 4.56 on 265/75/16 and 70 for me is just over 3 grand like 3100. And according to my tom tom my speedo is almost 2mphs off. I think it may be a little too high for me I dont' know if i should bump the tire size up or re gear so i can do 70 at under 3 grand
