3.0 Low power then jolts up at around 3,000 RPM
 

I have a 94 pickup 4wd manual.
When taking off it feels like I’m dragging an anchor behind me.
Then I get to around 3,000 RPM and it feels like it takes off better.
And also my RPM seems to be running higher.
If I'm in 5th fear doing 55 I'm already at 2,500 RPM. That seems high.
I’ve replaced plugs and wires, air filter, slave cylinder (unrelated) and brakes in the two weeks I’ve had it.
If anyone could point me in a direction to head off in, it would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds pretty normal. The 3vze is a high rpm engine, and doesn't make much power below 3000 rpm. The best way to drive it for performance is to upshift at 4000 rpm, and downshift when it drops to 3000 on the hills. You'll never hurt the engine doing that. It will run all day at 4000 rpm.

With 31 inch tires and 4.56 rear end gears, you should be at 58 mph at 2500 rpm. Sounds like you're close, probably within the accuracy of your speedometer. Two things. (1) Do you know your actual rear end ratio and tire size? (2) Have you checked your speedometer against a GPS.?

I’m not sure about the ratio. But I do have 31s. My speedo doesn’t work soo use an app on my phone that’s pretty accurate when compared to another actual speedo.
Thank you for the input. I’ve only had this truck about a month. I owned one years ago but it was the 22re and from what I’ve read this is an entirely different beast with no comparison lol

Another question. My idle is around 500 RPM. is that normal also?

That sounds low. It should be 750-800. There's an adjustment for that, but it will be this evening before I can give you more detail.

If you're concerned about power a compression test would be a good idea.

Attached is the service manual page for adjusting idle. The idle adjust screw is on the throttle body itself. It basically controls bypass air around the throttle plate. Do not adjust any of the throttle linkage stop screws to change idle speed.That will mess up your TPS idle detection circuit.

I also found a leak on my intake hose. Once I fixed that and made a slight adjustment to the screw, all is well.

SOLVED: Low RPM and shake at idle
 

Just an update for anyone having this issue.
My truck (3.0 4x4) was idling at around 500-600- and was shaking when sitting.
I messed with everything I could think of. TPS, MAF sensor, throttle cable itself.
It all came down to one thing.
A LEAK ON MY INTAKE LINE
The rubber hose that attaches my air filter box to my intake, on the underside, right before the intake had a split that I had been overlooking.
In all fairness the truck sat for over a year with no attention whatsoever.
After finding the leak and replacing the hose (expensive in my opinion), I dialed in the idle with the screw on the intake, and it’s all good as new.
Just a heads up for anyone else who was as stumped as me for way too long.
