Damn Scotty, your truck looks sweet! Nice job.

i dig the find on the sr5 seats! let me know what you think of the dual 2.28's. i know everyone says "ya gotta go with the ultimate 4.7 set up...yada yada yada..." but i've been seriously tempted to try out dual 2.28's and see how well they do. i mean, i'm a real world wheeler and have always done good with just a stock box. granted, there are times where i wish i had lower gears and that's why i've considered doing what you did. i bet doubling up with a second 2.28 box will make a world of difference. so anyway, let me know what you think in terms of practicality. thanks!

Well, its still very easy to go 4.7 at anytime. If I end up feeling the need for the 4.7s, I'll just build a spare case and then swap it in all at once so I have no downtime.

Verry impressive. what did that set you back? I see you have a few new parts there in your pix.

I guess i missed it but what type of axles are under your rig? Just yotas?
I like the mods to increase the strength on the front axle!!
Very cool

Stock Yota axles. IFS rear axle, 85' front. I build these for a living, and used ot work for All-Pro, so I have a lot of experience with how I want my rigs built and stuff.

5.29 gears and open for now. I'll set up two more 3rds with 5.29s and lockers over the winter and then drop them in next spring with a set of Longfields. This way I can go through the axles at the end of each season to see if anything is wrong.

curious to see how you like the 'stock' dual cases...

I want to do that same setup, only after an AT.

I used to run the A/T with a single stock case. I loved that setup believe it or not (except for the mileage and power it robbed). I ran it on the Hammers and it did just fine crawling. If anything, a single 4.7 gear case would be ideal. The A/T makes it so much easier on the drivetrain. You can even get away with 5.71s with the A/T with no gear issues. However, going to dual cases is NOT cheap. Inchworm and Gear slug are the only companies that offer the adapter and it still requires a partial tear down of the tranny.

I know, Toyota had to be gay with their autos and put the parking pawl inside the transfer case...

The doubler is not high on my list. I'm going to do gears and lockers first. Really, I figure I'll get the t-case adapter and duals when my case craps out.

Side note, sometimes my t-case won't go into 4lo. The guy I bought the truck from says that it was because of a high idle, but the truck doesn't feel like it idles that high. Only once have I had a problem with it not shifting and when I turned the truck off (nuetral) and shifted into 2hi and then back into 4lo, turned it back on and it was in 4lo. Any ideas of what the problem might be?

Not real sure. I haven't heard too many issues with the A340 Tcase not engaging.

There is a way around it. The A340 is the same tranny as a Jeep Cherokee AW4. Just swap bellhousings with yours. You get a 23 spline output then, a removable tcase, and a standard D300/Atlas bolt pattern. In fact, the D300 (read twin-sticks!) will bolt directly to it and already be passenger side drop.

Nice work. My dual adapter should be delivered Tuesday or Wednesday, just need the drive shaft work done...hopefully with in a few weeks I will be able to crawl like you...

:drink: Outstanding work on the 4Runner, it would have a welcome spot in my driveway anytime!:rockin:

ScottyC 11-29-2007 02:06 PM

Finally got the new tranny and dual cases completely squared away and the long travel driveshaft finished. So, i flexed it out a little.

Sorry, I lost it, who makes the rear bumper, Scotty? I got an 88 and can't find stuff like that for it. Can I buy a used one or do I have to make my own? Hello welder, what kind to buy? Everyone should be jealous of your rig, nicely done Scott.

I built the tire carrier myself.

What would you charge to make a bumper like that?

PM'd you

I started on my front winch bumper today. I was going to use a pre-made winch mount, but a friend dropped off a sweet 1/4" plate that was the perfect size for what I was going to do. So, I went ahead and started fabbing. Keep in mind this is still a work in progress.
