2nd build-up........project Substance Abuse....
This is my 2nd SAS 4runner project. The first one was sold to fund the move to CO and to star Addicted. This time around I went with another 88' 4runner with a 22RE/5spd instead of the A/T.
So, yesterday I started the SAS. I drove it to the shop, and we immediately started cutting By the end of the day the IFS was out, front springs hung and axle housing was under the rig. Today I didn't get an early start, but by the end of the day the rear is ready to set the pinion angle. We also moved the front hanger back 1/2" since we had a less than stellar front shackle angle. Hopefully tomorrow we will have the 37s bolted on, front axle assembled, and everything else mounted making it drivable until next Tuesday. In the meantime I will build the 5.29 3rds and prep the tub for the dual case install. Here is the rig I am starting with http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/... carrier 2.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...4_PICT6415.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...1_PICT6417.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...8_PICT6418.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...8_PICT6420.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...3_PICT6424.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...9_PICT6425.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...9_PICT6426.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...1_PICT6429.JPG |

Quick update. Dual cases are now in. For now I am just running the 2.28 stock rear case. I'll add a 4.7 gear set if I think I need it. As it stands I am at 108:1 with the 5.29s. We'll see how that plays out.
I need to find a decent shifter boot. I think I am going to grab a front shifter boot setup and cut it to fit the new shifter. http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...7_PICT6638.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...3_PICT6643.JPG I also added some sweet 85' SR5 4runner seats to the rig. I found these in a wrecked 85' that John and I grabbed some parts off of. They are in incredible condition now that I was able to clean them up. http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...6_PICT6639.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...0_PICT6640.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...5_PICT6641.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...8_PICT6644.JPG http://www.toyotaholics.com/support/...5_PICT6637.JPG |
Verry impressive. what did that set you back? I see you have a few new parts there in your pix.
I guess i missed it but what type of axles are under your rig? Just yotas? I like the mods to increase the strength on the front axle!! Very cool |
Damn Scotty, your truck looks sweet! Nice job.
|
i dig the find on the sr5 seats! let me know what you think of the dual 2.28's. i know everyone says "ya gotta go with the ultimate 4.7 set up...yada yada yada..." but i've been seriously tempted to try out dual 2.28's and see how well they do. i mean, i'm a real world wheeler and have always done good with just a stock box. granted, there are times where i wish i had lower gears and that's why i've considered doing what you did. i bet doubling up with a second 2.28 box will make a world of difference. so anyway, let me know what you think in terms of practicality. thanks!

I'll set up two more 3rds with 5.29s and lockers over the winter and then drop them in next spring with a set of Longfields. This way I can go through the axles at the end of each season to see if anything is wrong. |
curious to see how you like the 'stock' dual cases...
I want to do that same setup, only after an AT. |

I know, Toyota had to be gay with their autos and put the parking pawl inside the transfer case...
The doubler is not high on my list. I'm going to do gears and lockers first. Really, I figure I'll get the t-case adapter and duals when my case craps out. Side note, sometimes my t-case won't go into 4lo. The guy I bought the truck from says that it was because of a high idle, but the truck doesn't feel like it idles that high. Only once have I had a problem with it not shifting and when I turned the truck off (nuetral) and shifted into 2hi and then back into 4lo, turned it back on and it was in 4lo. Any ideas of what the problem might be? |
wow i mean just wow how much for me to ship mine to you and have you do that to mine??????????

Nice work. My dual adapter should be delivered Tuesday or Wednesday, just need the drive shaft work done...hopefully with in a few weeks I will be able to crawl like you...
:drink: Outstanding work on the 4Runner, it would have a welcome spot in my driveway anytime!:rockin: |
Finally got the new tranny and dual cases completely squared away and the long travel driveshaft finished. So, i flexed it out a little.

Sorry, I lost it, who makes the rear bumper, Scotty? I got an 88 and can't find stuff like that for it. Can I buy a used one or do I have to make my own? Hello welder, what kind to buy? Everyone should be jealous of your rig, nicely done Scott.

What would you charge to make a bumper like that?

I started on my front winch bumper today. I was going to use a pre-made winch mount, but a friend dropped off a sweet 1/4" plate that was the perfect size for what I was going to do. So, I went ahead and started fabbing. Keep in mind this is still a work in progress.
