1998 4runner 3rd question
 

I am new to the toyota world but I finally got a 1987 4runner I wanted since high school. Anyway I been searching for the past hour but can't find an answer....I been getting part together for my sas, I bought a wrecked '98 44runner will the 3rd member work in the solid front axle? Or did I waist my time and money pulling it? Thanks what's left of the 4runner is for sale too.

Is it an e-locker? what kind of suspension? leaf spring front SAS or 3 link? I was told the e-lockers wouldn't fit on a leaf spring SAS due to how close the leaf springs/u-bolts and perches are to the 3rd member and the e-locker motor.

Open diff, plain ol leaf springs

The other things to think about are gear ratio (make sure front and rear match) and how high you lift it, if you are going pretty tall you will REALLY want a high pinion 3rd member in the front and you will likely need a high angle driveline.

Another question, why are you not using the 3rd member from the front axle you are planning to swap in?
Any Toyota 8 inch 3rd member should bolt right in, but once again, verify the front and rear gear ratios match.

Yes thanks I understand the driveshaft sngles, matching gears and all that, I couldn't find a complete axle around here so I been getting parts here and there....housing, knuckles, 3rd all coming from diff locations

Decide now how tall you are going to go with your swap.
keep in mind that my 95 is a 3" trail gear swap kit and you get WAY more than 3 inches of lift. Mine also had a 1" body lift when I bought it and I'm running 37" tires with no rub. I had to go with a high pinion front and high angle driveline too.
So you may need to go with a high pinion front diff as well and you are likely to be better off in the long run to buy a pre-built 3rd member right out of the gate. Mine also had factory 4:88 gears and no aftermarket parts fit them, if I had known that I would have bought a complete 3rd for the rear as well. Instead I had all the rebuild parts, new ring and pinion and Zip locker sitting there while I went hunting for another diff carrier to put them in.

Ok thanks for all the info, I built plenty of jeeps all the way up to the 1 ton cj I crawl with now but this is my 1st toyota. Id like 35s but most likely go with 33s to keep it more drivable. But like I said I will be a while before I can get all parts together.
