Header Size Info
 

I am wanting to upgrade my Pacesetter header to a Doug Thorley Tri-Y header. I found a good deal on ebay for one that has 1-1/2" primaries.

My question is with my motor having exhaust and intake and cam, will this be plenty, or would I benefit using bigger primaries with future upgrades including intake manifold, tb, and more?

What do most people use/have?

i am running a downey header with 2.5" exhaust from downey. woke my 22re up a lil.

1.5" primaries seem to be standard for all the aftermarket headers except for Downey, which had a 1 3/8" primary ID. Old thread, but here's the list: HEADERS

I don't see you gaining much by swapping headers since you've already got a full exhaust; other than changing the range of RPMs that the header is tuned toward. Tri-Y would probably be better all around since you're most likely not doing high RPM stuff that the 4:1 headers are designed for - and if you sell your old one you can put it toward the new DT. If you wanted, you could open up your intake with a Supra AFM, battery/intake swap for shorter air travel, snorkel for "ram air", etc etc...but it's still a 22re and you're never going to get the power you want. Probably cost lest to swap a 2.7L or 3.4L in there vs the cost of all the 22re upgrades.

I wanna lower the hp/tq in the rpm range for daily driving and crawling ect...
Where do I find a Supra AFM? What years am I looking for? I heard also a Supra TB that's straighter or 92-94 22RE TB possibly? I'm not looking for insane power as this motor will out last any others for the most part and the few things done to it will still be much less than spending money on a bigger v6 that wont last as long. I am trying to make the most of what I got for not too much like most do. I will have to try to come up with a swap for intake and battery. no problemo. yeah, i would personally run the tri-y header if i were to buy one. makes sense for the low-end power. maybe when i rebuild my 22re i'll spring for a thorley. couldn't really say you're going to feel much difference since you've already got a header and open exhaust as opposed to someone coming from stock exhaust.

you'll have to search out the supra AFM swap to find out which one you need. most likely it'll take a while to find the right one for direct swap unless you feel like messing with soldering in the electronics from your old one at the risk of damaging it. there are a few threads on swapping the airbox with the battery - seems pretty straightforward, but i'm not a fan of running a cone filter personally - and most seem to go this route due to a lack of space, but it can be done with some finagling. i can't help on the TB questions as I haven't read much on that; i would think they all have the same size ID otherwise people would be all over it. perhaps someone else has info on that.
