22RE Rebuild or ?

1 Attachment(s)
I have a 22re in my 1985 4Runner that just blew its head gasket. The engine was rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago. The engine was going through 3 quarts of oil every 3000 miles. My question is do I rebuild it with a new head or buy a long block from Oregon Engine rebuilders. My concern with rebuilding my current engine is that I will still be consuming all that oil. Is there a way to tell were the oil is going? I never notice it smoking. I would hate to put the money in a new head and have the bottom end be a problem. I'm leaning towards a different engine. I appreciate your opinions.

Not really an answer to your question, but I just put in a new Long Block from ORE. Dealing with them was nothing but pleasant, they have a LIFETIME warantee, and the motor has 50 miles on it so far and is running excellent (except for an idle issue I'm chasing down) I got the superstock longblock from their ebay store for 1500.

damn good looking rig....

If you got the money, want to save time, and are going to keep the rig for a long time.
I would go with the new motor, might as well put on a performance head. Less worry in the future and you have a spare motor to build or sell.

If you like tinkering want to save some money, have a spare car then rebuild.

In the end it seems to really be a factor of how much money you have.

ADH007 I like hearing your purchase from Oregon Engine rebuilders went well. I've gotten some mix reviews from people who baought engines from them.I to was looking at the Super Stocker. Keep me posted on how she runs.
