Trail gear twin sticks fell off wtf?
On my recently acquired 1st gen runner with twin sticks that had been installed about 5 years ago i have a little issue.
Driving down the road i noticed the 4wd arm was leaning, upon removing the boot to check it out the whole damn arm just came off. Look like it was made with a crappy weld that finally gave it up. Called TG and they said all they would do is give me a discount on buying a new one so i told them how about standing behind your product...no dice. Has this happened to anyone else and what did you do for a repair? thanks! |
A pic is worth a thousand words.
If that part has been in service 5 years and you just got the truck, who knows what abuse it has suffered. |

The fact that YOU did not install the twin sticks in the first place would void most warranties. To be honest, Trail Gear gave you a generous offer considering you did not buy their product, it was already installed when you bought the truck. Like millball said, a picture is worth a thousand words. Can you just re-weld the shifter/arm? :safari: |
yep who knows what it went through, a 6 year old pushing off it to get in the back seat a few times will shorten its livespan
edit- so you bought Dirtco's old turbo, this has gone through a couple of owner's since he sold it.. |
As someone who is currently looking to buy this twin stick setup, I'd sure like to hear from anyone else who uses it.

My tg twin stick been going strong for 5ish years now. No regerts. Bought because I needed to convert a fwd shift to a top shift and it wasnt that much more to add the twin stick.

I love the TG twin stick setup in my '85. When I first installed it, it would bang against the edge of the hole in the tunnel every time I started the truck or clutched it hard. So I replaced the stock trans mount with a stiff poly unit, that solved the problem. It's the 4wd arm that would get banged up if the trans mount wasn't stiff enough to keep it off the tunnel, so that could be the cause of the problem in this post. For my truck the twin stick unlocks a lot of functionality.

I’m interested in knowing what a twin stick is besides 2 sticks obviously. What exactly do they accomplish and why?? Is there a benefit? And will it bolt up in a stock configuration without modifications??
|
It separates high/low and 2wd/4wd into two sticks, allowing for 2wd low range. You have to take the transfer case apart and pull out a pin, so while the shifter does just bolt on, you have to disassemble the t case to make it work.

Thanks for the response, by take the transfer case apart are you meaning pull the t case and split it or from the top only?? Seems like a lot of work for a second stick when you can have 2 low with manual hubs. But I can see this being really cool specially if your in there anyway doing something like switching to a lower range low. I’d definitely like a lower range low for the extra slow stuff.
https://trail-gear.com/downloads/pdf...7500-1-INS.pdf yes, hubs unlocked does the same thing, but I have drive flanges, so they cant be unlocked. I mainly did the twin stick because I was converting from a forward shift to a top shift while putting in lower gears and needed to buy a shifter anyway. Is it necessary, no. It is cool? Yes. And combined with a rear disconnect shaft, you could potentially do front diggs. |

You need to have the t case on a bench, but doesn't need to be totally split. Trail gear has really good instructions on their page that shows how it needs to be done.

I want the lowest possible with a single case and if I do it I would also go twin stick just for that cool factor alone. |
