I would try cleaning the contacts (WD40 and/or Electrical parts cleaner) with a thin cloth before filing. Filing would remove material and you may lose the connection completely.

I can confirm 1 from the back of the engine (maybe the bell housing bolt) to firewall ground - less than a foot long and pretty small gauge, un-insulated, it looks original. I wouldn't be surprised...
