I would take the unit to a store that offers free testing to see it makes the whining noise there.
Are you sure its the alternator making the noise? Anything with a pulley can...

With the wife's help I recovered it with a close matching marine grade vinyl.

Could be just a bad area of the hdd.
If chkdsk cant repair the area it will prevent anything from being copied in the future, but now that you have a hdd image and your back ups...

It could be the hard drive. Did you save all your files and pictures? I wouldnt mess with it until I got the system image created.
Did you run chkdsk on the drive? Any bad sectors? Connections...

I did leave it on. I started to take it off but...

I did leave it on.
I started to take it off but it turned into a huge mess. So far its held up great in the Florida sun.(almost 2 years now)
