    sorry for my super-late reply!
Any progress on your swap? I imagine it would be hard to find a shop to do it since it's not as straight forward as following the steps in a repair manual from toyota...

not necessarily for the engine but the computer must be. It's best to get everything from the same donor but I didn't do that. I got a 98 2wd 4runner auto engine and a 97 4runner 4wd computer and it works great. There are a lot of little nuances of what you can and cannot mix but in general the 97-98s are closest in design. One of the things that I've seen is that most, if not all, of the 4runners do not have EGR valves which makes things easier for clearing the steering shaft. Not sure where you live but start networking for yota-philes in your area and they can keep you in the know for donors as they come up.
I hope that helps, let me know if I can do anything else for you.
