Refurb steering box in Canada?
Can anyone recommend for me a place in Canada to get a remanufactured steering box for my '91 3.0? I see a few in the US on ebay but cross border shipping is soooo slow at the moment and I need it this week ideally. TIA

My 86 power steering gear seals blew and the slop was bad. I went the refurbished way and bought them from Auto Zone, Pep Boys, and Advanced Auto. They were $185 to $225. They all bolted up fine, BUT on all 3 the SG input shaft would not take the rag joint end fitting. The splines were the same number, but the SG input shaft diameter was too large. So, i bought a used rag joint to have the inside machined 1/16 inch to make it fit the next one. Never did that.
Instead I bought a used one from an online salvage parts distributor. There are a bunch out there. Got one for $98 shipped across the USA. It has a warranty too. There was the words TOYOTA cast into the housing. Bolted up and the SG input sahft fit my OEM rag joint perfectly. It's been 5 years and 47,000 miles and not a leak or problem,
My long winded point is try an online salvage part search site. Maybe this one has one for your truck

OK, thanks, hadn't thought of salvage places - bit concerened that a salvage gear might not be any better than what I have though - my truck has been well looked after and only has 260,00kms and the box is leaking.

I was too, but most will warrant them, so they check them out before the ship. Mine was less than half the cost and 5 years ad 47,000 miles later works like new. No issues. My Truck is well maintained with 473,000 and has been/still is my daily driver for 34 years. My OEM one lasted over 420,000 miles, so a used Toyota one seemed OK. I really had no choice but to try salvage. The 3 remanufactured ones that were suppose to fit didn't. The manager of AZ delivered it to confirm the fit. When I showed him how the rag joint wouldn't fit he was baffled. Auto store remanufactured parts can be pure junk like AC compressors, alternators, starters.....etc.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Is that 473,000 miles?! That's incredible, I only hope my truck lasts as long, it's my 3rd 4Runner, but far and away the best in terms of having little corrosion and having been well maintained through its life. Is yours 22R-E or 3VZ-E?
Your experience gives me a bit more confidence in a salvage part, did the one you got have any stamping other than "Toyota"? I can find lots of Cardones, Lares and ACDelcos, but nothing actually stamped Toyota.
Thanks again for your help.

Yea. Still no discernible oil burn between 5000 mile oild chqanges with Castol GTX 10w-40. Original engine internals, injectors, 5-speed transmission, drive shaft, and differential. I am now replacing parts that normally would last a life time- all wheel bearings, steering linkage with a used gear box, radiator as the seems finally gave out, control arm bushings, ball joints, leaf spring bushings, Motor/Transmission mounts...etc. All parts avail;able and much affordable. Original AC system, but not as cold as new of 34 on recic, now around 38.
I do change engine oil every 5000 miles and transmission/differential lube oil evey 100,000 miles.
None of the parts store ones had Toyota cast into the body. The used OEM did and that input shaft was the only one that would fit the rag joint. Never buy Cardone anything- pure junk. I use Rockauto for parts as they same and more brands than local auto parts stores. Buy Denso new or rebuilt for sensors. alternators, starters, AC compressor. They are near same price, better quality, and work.
