Bought Transmission with metal particles beneath shift lever ???HELP
Good day to one and all, hoping all is well in these times. I am some what embarrassed to post this, but
i will continue if it will help someone. I Had a previous posting about intalling a transmission for my son 92
4x4 5 speed. I was informed by YOTA'S enthusiast not to purchase a used trans, which i did on craigslist.I did with deep regret.
In times like this, i was wanting to hold on to some cash,by buying a trans that i was told, was in a wreck,and had 170,000 miles on it.
The guy whom i made the purchase from said it was driving and shifting well.
As i was preparing the trans for a swap, by removing old fluid, water came out with the oil.The owner said it has been setting in
his garage for 2 yrs,"it must be condensation", which i highly believe because it poured out. It doesn't matter what i think does it?
As i remove the shifter lever this is what i found at the bottom, beneath the shifter lever.
These metal particles, looks like it was apart of a bearing or wring, i'm assuming. I had to use the magnet pickup tool to remove the metal fragment
that was sitting at the bottom. Can someone mind sharing their views on what they think, besides me losing $300 bucks and a 8hr
drive to pick it up.Thanks. IT is more embarrassing to say i blew my head gasket on my 91 toyota driving there, but that is another story.

I feel for you mate! The PO was a right putt's and seems to have put the spare bits into the opening, LOL. Is there a thin metal plate that was under the gasket and casting that the gear lever rides in. It is a splash shield that helps stop the gear oil from flying up into the gear leaver pivot area. The PO for my 91 4Runner had put it in backwards and the lever was cold working its way through the metal and it sort of looks like one of your parts in the picture. Is it quiet when you spin the input shaft with a power drill? Can you shift into a gear and get the counter shaft to rotate with load through it and see if it is still quiet and doesn't bind?
It spins freely and quiet when i spun the input shaft with the drill. I suppose those pieces
found was from the shifter. Yet skeptical, i installed the trans, and surprisingly it ran well.
Now it is time to do a rebuild on my 91 toy.Thanks man
