Grinding noise while accelerating in 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th gear
Good day to one and all. I am hoping this post finds each one of you in the best of health, in these times.
I am having an issue with my son's 92 4x4 5 speed Yota, I am hoping someone out there can help, Thanks.
There is a grinding noise in 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th gear only while accelerating. Can someone share their thoughts
on what they believe it might be? Thanks.

Could be the counter shaft bearing in the transmission. 4th gear is straight through and doesn't use the counter shaft, thus no noise. Probably a transmission tear down is in your future.

Like RJR says.
Mine sounded like semi on the fwy except on 4th gear. I was on my Route 66 trip and was still able to accelerate and run fast on freeway. A few Yota bros here said I could still drive back to So Cal with it, but being in TX at that time, I figured it would be safer and less expensive to have tranny rebuilt there. Good decision. For $1385 I drove a "new" transmission home.

The first thing I did after hearing the noise was going for a diagnostic check at a transmission repair shop.
I was told the trans was not the problem. After hearing your thoughts I will go for a second at AAMCO tomorrow.
Thanks

Unfortunately you still have to pull the trans to get to the front input bearing so make sure they take a good look at clutch, throwout bearing and flywheel while in there and assess the trans while out. You don’t want to pay for labor again in the future if it can be avoided.

Good day to one and all .It is confirmed by AAMCO that the issue is the front bearings that is gone. They want $2300 not to mention tax. And if their is other
parts that needs replacement, that would be more. In these times, where money is funny, I might just look for a tranny from the junk yard and do the
swap on my own to save some cash in times like this. Wish me luck. Thanks for all your positive input guys. When I am done with the swap, when I find one, I will give a feed back on my
results and accomplishments. By the way, this would not be a rebuild that they would do, this would be a repair.

Aamco considers replacing all the bearings and worn parts a “repair” and not a rebuild!? What the...
I’m one of the first to draw distinct lines between repaired, rebuilt, and reman. The word REMAN frequently gets tossed about and mislabeled.
This must have something to do with their warranty. I’m guessing that even though you paid them to disassemble the trans and replace all bearings, seals, gaskets, and evacuate synchros, gears, etc. if something fails soon after and it’s not one of the parts they replaced then you’re on the hook.

The trans that I bought was from a wreck, 17900 miles, I could not get the vehicle ID to match, but the truck was driven by seller before wreckage.
Looks identical to mine, so I am looking forward to a swap. Thanks for all the help guys. After completing the swap and a test run, I will give run down
on my accomplishments. Thanks again.

good day to one and all.I wanted to give a recap concerning the trans.
I finally installed it last night, went on a test drive and like always running
strong, well it is a toyota. Thanks for all the help and feedback.
