95 22rec into a 87 22r body engine swap
I have a 1987 pickup 5 speed 4x4. My 22r has a cracked block. So I am in the market for a new engine and found a rebuilt 22rec out of a 95 4Runner.
I know this engine will fit but I’ve found it difficult to find concrete information about this 22rec. I’m not sure if the 22 rec is a fuel injected engine with California emissions or if there are carb models of this engine? I read all of the engines past 1990 are EFI. The intake is my main concern because, I would like to bolt everything from my 22r onto the 22rec.
Would my intake and carb bolt straight onto the head? I know the exhaust will bolt on as long as the head has pear shaped exhaust ports which are in the 85-95 heads.
What else may I run into during this swap? Did the size of the flywheel change? Has anyone ever done this particular swap? Any clarification or advice would be highly appreciated!

Someone has rebuilt many 22r would have a lot of knowledge on this. I know the castings of the block are the same for the 22r, 22re, and 22rec. I don’t see why the intake from the 22r wouldn’t bolt straight onto the 22rec?

You 1986 22r stuff will bolt right up to a post 85 head.

Is your 87 a California car? Do you have the original vacuum diagram affixed to the underside of hood? The block swap will work fine. Depending on the state you are in, and if you have to comply with visual emission inspection, you may have to make your 87 vacuum compliant, otherwise all parts will fit your 87.

I am currently doing a swap of an 89 22re to an 87. You can put all your manifolding on to the 95. However, the 95 has the upper plenum improved intake and throttle body which appeared in 89. Some like to do this swap or you can leave it stock, which is probably the simplest and easiest to do. Have fun.

I am a little late to the party, but yes you can take the 1995 long block engine and just bolt on your 22R parts to it. The long blocks of the 1985-1995 22R and 22RE (and 22REC) are the same.
Since your 22R uses a mechanical fuel pump and the 22RE does not, you will need to remove the fuel pump block off plate on the 1995 22RE head. In order for the mechanical fuel pump to work, you will need to remove the fuel pump eccentric from the cam shaft on your 1987 22R and install it on the end of the cam on the 1995 engine.
Take a look at this thread to see what I am talking about: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f115...l-pump-109852/
