Hello Yota fans,
I know there is some build threads and RTT threads already on this forum. Mods, please move this thread or add to another if you want to combine this with others of the same. I thought of just adding this and reviving a thread already in use! But, as of this date there are many more products and owners that are building and Overlanding their Toyota trucks. Even in just 2 years, there has been an industry explosion, on all things Overland! Post your pictures of your Overland build, with a list of mods, please? Also, list what has worked for you and what you would do different, if doing the build again. I hope this helps others in the search of mods. that work and ones to avoid. Just like fishing gear that catches fish, and gear that catches fishermen! Vance.
None of my pictures are on this device! Will add some soon, sorry! Please help me out and post some pictures?

Here are some pictures as promised. Vance.
Maybe not Toyota, but cool. My stock 99’ t4r now.
My 35L Canyon cooler and my Dometic CFX 75 DZW, fridge/freezer. My Gordigear Explorer Plus RTT and the extra cross bars, to mount my tent.

I hope others will add to this thread? I have some mods but will be working yet this week putting on the RTT, and settling with a spot for my fridge.
Pros: it’s a 4Runner even stock takes me many places off road. Looking forward to not sleeping on the ground. Be nice to keep my food fresh while on long trips and adventures.
Cons: The Dometic fridge/ freezer is big and weighs in at 75 lbs. empty.
okay, will post pictures when I have the RTT setup on my t4r. Vance.
No roof-top tent, no fridge, no a lot of things....just came back from two weeks and over 3000 miles of going more remote and not so remote places and spending nights dispersed camping in a tent, our biggest trip of the year. Not an overlanding rig per se, it started out as a second-owner stocker, I've spent the past 15 years building as needed or wanted.
The fire ring was already there, we don't typically do camp fires.
Tent, toilet, cooler, awning...that sort of stuff.
habanero,
you just proved you don’t need fancy gear to have one fun adventure. And yes, what you did fits the definition of Overlanding. That is quite the trip, it sounds like, with stories for a lifetime! Vance.
Here is a picture with my Gordigear RTT, on my factory roof rack x Two!. No noise at 60-70 with a 35 MPH headwind. Will be leaving this on for the Winter and will give a long term review how my RTT and DIY roof rack work out. No garage, and some real Fall and Winter use! Vance.

The vehicle I use as of now is a 99’ Toyota 4Runner 4x4. Has 118,000 miles on it. I keep all the maintenance up to date and trust the dependability. I am running 265/75/16 Cooper AT3 tires on the stock lift. I have the factory locking rear axle, open front axle. I am using 4 stock cross bars on the roof of my Runner to attach and support my RTT ( Roof top tent ).
For navigation, I carry paper maps, and I am using Gaia Pro, on my iPad, and iPhone. Portable hand held cheap VHF/ walkie- talkies.
I carry a good complete first-aid kit. And a “Ten essentials” kit, that I put together.
The RTT is a Gordigear, that I bought used this last summer. Love it!
I have Two REI 30 degree sleeping bags that I zip together for a big roomy bag. I can add my down sleeping bag to the mix in cold weather. I can put my pillow in the same stuff bag.
I use Three clear medium size plastic totes, to keep some of my gear in. Then Two plastic milk crates for the rest. One tote for my dry goods foods. One tote for my dishes, biodegradable soap, cutting board, paper towels, tinfoil, stick matches, hot pan mittens, toilet paper. One for dog food, dog water and food pans. One milk crate, holds, extra propane canisters, propane lantern, extra mantles, extra Coleman fuel when using that stove. One holds my bottle jack and handle, hatchet, Flashlight, extra batteries for flashlight, gloves, extra small pieces of rope, 3lbs. Hammer,
I use a 35L. Canyon Cooler, for my cold foods and perishables. I freeze a One gal. water bottle, and use that in place of ice.
Two 6gal. water Jerry jugs from Walmart.
I have a small devided, Three shelved container that I use for my silverware, knives, spatula, and the like. I like using my Bedourie cooker, or one 10 inch cast iron pan.
I have many stoves to use, but most of the time I use a propane stove from my Turkey deep Fryer, or a Two burner Coleman multi-fuel stove. If using the propane stove I have a 2-1/2 gal.bulk propane tank, and a mast that works to hook up both propane stove and a lantern at the same time.
I have a duffel bag that I use for my clothing.
sometimes I carry an extra tarp.
I also carry an 12VDC ARB Twin portable air compressor, along with a full size spare tire! Also, a tire repair kit. Auto tire screw on tire deflators.
I carry Three DRings, 30’ tow strap, 20’ Hardened 3/8” chain with hooks on both ends.extra ratchet straps, 100’ of climbing rope.
I’m sure I missed some things, but this is most of it. This works for long and short trips just add more or less food and water depending on the length of my adventures.
I used ratchet straps to tie all my gear down in the back of my Runner, just in case of an accident!
Hope more will share share what you carry. Hope this helps answer someone‘s question on what to bring. Your list may be different than mine, and that’s how it should be. Learn by startling out with something like my list and add or change what you find you need as you need it. . Best advice is to just get out there and explore! Be safe and get out and explore! Vance.

Reason: Add pictures.
One of these days I'll get a build thread going, but here's the quick version covering the most useful, IMO, overland-specific gear and mods.
Favorite Gear and Mods:
Milwaukee M18/M12 12V battery charger (for lanterns, bluetooth speaker, chainsaw, water pump, heated jacket, shop vac, list goes on)
Dual Battery w/ Pirhana DBE 180SX isolator, solar charge controller, 100W solar panel
Basenji for cold nights
James Baroud RTT with (covered) porch. Pull into camp at midnight, you're snoozing in the tent five minutes later. If you're considering a RTT, think about a porch. Much nicer than getting straight into tent from ladder.
Ozpig firepit / cooking stove. Game changer for winter camping.
Next steps:
Roadshower 4L w/ propane water heater. It's in the shop, working on a rack for it. Two days is about my limit without a shower before I get cranky. Dishes just not that easy to do without running water. Also, bringing the dog where there's poison oak, you're in for a world of hurt without a shower.
Modify RTT rack to include telescoping support for larger porch / awning.
Mr Heater or equivalent. Hypothermia is no joke. If you're 100 miles from nowhere in cold weather, you may need to warm up in a hurry, best to have a few options for doing so. It gets dangerous real quick.
And a minor detail I keep forgetting-small dry box or bag for storing dirty boots outside RTT.
