My 1996 toyota 4runner has been nickel and dimeing me ever since i purchased it from some white trash guy, first mistake, anyways, when i put the car in neutral and put it in 4 wheel high it takes a minute for the light to turn on, and when im done, i put it back in neutral and back into 2wd but the light doesnt turn off and it doesnt disengage. Also when it goes above 20mph its pretty loud driving it, dont know why either. Please help!!

I can get it disengaged by putting it in 2wd, disconnecting the battery and then after starting the car, putting it in reverse. Then it turns off.

I found it easier to manage the 4wd functions after I read the owners manual. Sounds like that wasn't included in the purchase?

It takes a certain rpm to get back to 2wd. I usually accelerate more to switch.

Otherwise, you may have to check the electrical connections for dirt or poor contact. Somewhere near the transmission or transfer case.

As far as the noise, be good to start with a fresh batch of front differential fluid. Check condition of old...anything metal isnt good.
If manual trans, are you sure the loud noise at 20mph in 4-hi or 4-lo?

Grinding noise? Then something else.

Hey, at least you got yourself a 4runner. The old gens are getting harder to find for sale.
