The lights require voltage and the alternator probably cannot supply enough to keep up with the lights and the ignition system. At idle it's pretty normal, if the alternator can't keep up around 2-3k rpm then you have a problem.

That's normal. There's only about 3 windings in an alternator and the stator only produces so much current at a low rpm.

The only fix for it that i know of is to get a higher output alternator.

My 89 does that when I turn the a/c on. It doesnt get low enough to cause a problem but it does drop a few rpms when i turn it on. Which is strange because my other 2 yotas go up in rpms.

Vsv working? The little valve is supposed to open up to increase idle speed when the alternator is working at idle... kinda like it does with the a/c on

Well that sucks. Turn the idle up a smidge then try again and see what happens. You may not be turning at normal idle which keeps the alt. Output real low like 15 amps or so.

Do it while its running and it shouldn't take much. Make a mark on the housing so you know where you started and only go a half turn or so then you'll hear it idle up or down. Then try the lights. Since you don't have a tech it has to be by sound. Optimally on my 4x4 5 speed its like 750 rpms. But ive run it at 1100 when 4 wheeling because the which needsmore amps.
