Does anyone know if a 4th generation / 2005 4runner rear end will bolt up and work with a 3rd gen 1996-2002? Anyone know if the rear diffs will swap out? Any input appreciated!

You could look up that part on car-part.com. I looked up mine to see what years it would offer me, and the newest was a 2002. Based on that I would say that one from a 2005 will not fit. You can also look up the part as a 2005, and see if it will offer you parts from a 3rd gen.
