97 Tacoma wont start?? Help!

Well went wheeling the other day and the truck over heated. We let it cool down and it started backup got about half way home, it over heated and shut off. Had it towed home. Started it that night after the tow truck left. I started up but it had a rough idle. I shut it off took a shower and cried my self to sleep.

Here we are 3 days later I get the courage to try and start it and it just turns over. I sprayed some starting fluid and nothing. So what do I do next? How do I check for spark with this style motor? fuel pump? Ironic I ordered a repair manual from Amazon last week but its not here yet. Any help would be awsome. It a 97 3.4 a/t extra cab.

We did a comp test and only 1 cylinder was 190 all the rest where 30-50lbs. Is it common on these for both heads to warp? Also I think I need to check the timing marks cause im wondering if the valves are open?

Just why did it overheat??

Then you drive it till it quits.

at the least the head gaskets have failed at worst they are so warped and maybe cracked .

you check for spark like any other engine pull a plug on the left side ground it and crank.

just where did you spray the starting fluid.

Is the MIL on and did you pull the codes??

How badly did it overheat? Did you literally keep driving it until it shut off?

I guess a stick got slammed into the rad putting a hole in the bottom. Yes drove it till it quit.

Yes I checked, it does have spark.

I sprayed starting fluid in the intake cone and in a vac line right before the enterance to the tb.

The cel was coolant switch or something like that, I didnt right it down at first , then we un did the batt dicked around a bit. Then I went to right it down before we packed it in for the night but it was cleared via me unplugging the batt

So its possible for 5 holes to fail? I dont even want to waste my time checking the timing marks if its impossible for the timing to jump.

5 Holes to fail ??

Do you mean 5 cylinders with bad compression??

If you installed the compression tester and did the test by the book quite possible.

easy to check the timing belt remove the top cover you can slide it front far enough. just slide the top hose clamp toward the radiator no need to remove the hose.

if the belt is still intact and looks to be in decent shape the timing should be ok
