My new 01 4runner 4wd question

I have'nt taken delivery of my new rig but I had a hard time getting it in to 4x4 on the test drive. I asked how come and the owner said I needs to go in reverse to engage the 4x4 is this correct? Its a 2001 4runner a/t.

I don't need to do that on my 2000. I put it in neutral, shift to 4x4, and then put it back in drive and I'm good to go.

Ok so took ownership today. I had no issue getting it in to 4x4 but I did need to put it into reverse to get it out. I didn't go physically backwards. I could here the silonoid go off and the 4x4 lights went off. So not a huge issue but I assume something needs to be addressed?

if you're on dry pavement it may bind up a little. "Rocking" it helps to pop it loose.

X2 on that. Try it in a loose surface to insure there's no binding. Also make sure all fours tires are same brand and size.

Ive had the rig for little over a week now. I dont have any issue putting it in to 4x4. I do it on the fly no problems. Not sure why the PO had issues. Im sure Ill find out eventually.
