1986 4runner - Selinsgrove, PA $1
Ok - so I got this runner about a month ago and I'm an idiot for even agreeing to trade my 92 for it because it has a salvage title from Maryland. That being said, I need to get an emhanced inspection to register and restructure the title in PA. I talked to a mechanic today and was told what I already knew - that it needs to be 'stock' for him to even look at it. It has a 4" suspension lift and 33s. My issue is I don't have the $ or other resources to remove the lift and get it close to stock on my own. I'm posting to get some advice on whether I should strip and scrap it or if you guys think anyone would buy it knowing it needs the title restructured. I know a lot of toyota guys out there have parts and the means to get this machine on the road legally. I am interested in getting another one with a CLEAN title at some point. Let me know what ya'll think. Thanks

I'm in VA. If a vehicle is over 25 years old we can get antique plates for it and then it does not require a state inspection.
These are the general rules for antique plates in PA:
Antique Plates
PennDOT offers three types of special plates for older vehicles:
The plates cost $75, and there's also a $22.50 certificate of title fee. These are one-time fees, as the plates are permanent and remain valid for the life of the vehicle, provided there's no change in ownership.
No matter which plate you request, you must complete the antique/classic plate application. The rest of the application procedure varies according to the type of plate, but specific instructions are clearly provided on the form.
Mail all the necessary paperwork, along with your payment, to:
I will add that a lot of people seem to put them on daily drivers. A member here Irab just put MD antique plates on his 92 truck. I'm not sure whether he drives it every day or not.

Excellent. Thank you for taking the time to respond. This may be in there but do I need to restructure the title in order to get antique plates? If I do - then I still have to inspect ir. If not, I'll go ahead with the antique route. Thanks

It doesn't need to be stock to get a r title just has to be solid, and passé pa inspection. As long as it was fixed right it can be done go to another place and get it done that guy just didn't wanna deal with it

I'll take it somewhere else - it's a recovered theft that is marked salvage on the title - and it was 're-vinned' by the Maryland state police because the thieves stripped it - I know that I'll have to put stock tires on at least....thanks for the replies

Ha Ha. I looked that PA plate stuff up for you because I was trying to avoid going to the county dump. I have a theory that you can find an answer to any question by using Google. Then Copy & Paste.
I'm guessing the title you have will do. Think of "real" antique vehicles. The guy with a Model T turned onto a Hot Rod probably has a salvage title. If you go down to DMV in person and you have any problem respectfully ask to see a supervisor. The initial lady behind the counter might not be used to dealing with antique vehicles. I once had a situation where they got on the phone with the State Director and I ended up with my plates. And I was very polite.
