2nd gen grille conversion - Feesible?

I've always like the first gen 4runner grilles better than the second gen's. So one of these days I'd love to swap them out. Does anyone know if a first gen grille would fit on a second gen?

Presumptivly yeah it'll fit. I have the wrong one on my truck and only the lower middle clip doesn't line up with the hood latch brace. It's a pretty simple measure and find out.

I actually just found my answer which is yes. According to "kala" on ttora.com they all swap easily so as soon as I get enough moolah together I'll do a write-up.

Good to hear, I have just been thinking about doing this. Looks like I'll be making a trip to Yoda Jim's next week and digging through grilles.

I was just gonna start looking into this. I want to swap out the rad support so that I can get the first gen headlight housing to be able to put in H4 bulbs. I'll have to do the grille too. Hoping it is an easy swap, rad supports are like $20. If so, this will be the cheapest route to upgrading my crappy 2nd gen odd shaped headlights.

I've got a buddy who did the opposite of this. He trimmed a second gen 4runner grill to fit his second gen pickup. The clips didn't quite line up, so he has used bailing wire and zip ties to keep it in place.

Erm, much appreciate it if you could post up the "header panel" "grille" and "just light surround" prices if you remember when you get back. I could mail him but i'm kinda lazy like that, or call but it's long distance from out here.

Thanks!

I finally got around to swapping out grille's. Went to Yoda Jim's and he has some in pretty decent shape for $50. I found one on craigslist and snatched it up for $35. Some of the clips lined up but the whole thing stuck out an inch too much. I used the side light lenses as a judge to where I felt the grille should sit. I ended up cutting the clip supports down an inch, drilling a whole, and used zip ties to tighten it down. I also had to cut the bottom of the grille to fit around the rad fan. Overall I'm pretty happy with the swap. Now I just need to pull it off, sand the old gray paint off and paint it flat black.

I know this is an old thread but I didn't want to start another one. I know for a fact that a 1988 and before 4runner grille won't work on a 1990 but I've heard from a few places that an 1989 will work. Can anyone confirm this?

I will be at work for next two weeks but when I get back I am going to take the grille and headlight assembly off of my 89 pick up and put it on my 94 4runner just so I can have the regular headlights instead of angled ones.

Ill take pics and let you know how it goes.

I just managed to put a 90 pick-up grill on my 94 4runner, wasn't too hard, I kept the 94 side marker lights (there bigger) to line up the grill, used the black part off the back of the 94 headlights to line up the 90 headlight buckets, then drilled holes in the black part of the 94 buckets to attach adjustment screws for the 90 headlight. I had to drill a couple holes for grill pins in the core support and ziptied the 90 grill in place. (The vertical piece in front of the radiator I notched) The 90 grill is a little shorter side to side so I adjusted the marker lights in as much as I could to take up the gap. Both the 90 pick-up and 94 4runner headlights have 3 wires so i just swapped the plugs. Later today I'll be making the marker lights blink by swapping the marker light wires with the blinker wires and then I'll figure out marker lights (fender mount?) Anyways should be easy.

How well did the did the buckets and 5x7 assembly mount up to the radiator support aside from the grille? I'm just wondering if I would keep the 2nd gen grille and install the 5x7 headlights if they would just mount up easy
