I know there is a wealth of knowledge on here regarding tire sizing and appropriate lifts etc. But, what i am wondering is why do you have to have so much lift to fit 285/75-16's on your 4Runner? Mine has 265/75-16's which, by my calculations, is appx. 31.65" tall and 10.45" wide. I have absolutely no rubbing. So, I guess my question is...Why must I add a 2.5-3" lift in order to go up one tire size (285/75-16, or 32.83"tall and 11.22" wide)? I only want to put 1-1.5" of lift on my 4Runner. Please Help!

 

what year is your runner??..that would help...i have a '80 4x4 pickup..and i can fit 33x12.50's stock..but cant stuff em and turn...highway is ok...but not trail...well mud is ok too...i imagine u could fit 285/75's with minor lift...or just do a body lift..like a 2in. or somethin...BJ spacers up front AAL in the rear...if my dad and I lift the '86 4x4 ext cab pickup we just got..i'll go with BJ spacers...AAL in the rear...a small crank on the torsions...and run a 33x10.50 or maybe a 12.50..i think you'll be ok..just pound on your fenders a lil bit..you'll be fine

 

Sorry, it's a 1996 4x4 limited. I've also owned a 97 with the same tires, and no problem there either.

 

It's mostly because of the extra width on a 285, not the height. My 265/75R16 just touch the upper A-arms so to put a 285 on I'd have to change the backspacing of the wheels, which would mean the tires entire 20 mm extra width would be on the outside. At full stuff the tire would probably rub on the inner edge of the fender unless the fender was higher. I've tried a 255/85R16 on mine with no rubbing problems, and they have a slightly larger diameter than a 285/75.

 

I am actually looking at a 285/70-17 with a 17x9 wheel that has a 4.625 backspace. would that be enough backspace to clear?

 

how wide are those. of anymore than stock more backspacing is going to be needed.

 

The tires would be 11.25" wide. The new wheels would be 9" wide.

 

first of all you will probably have a lot of wear on the outside of your tires because that is to wide of a wheel for that narrow of a tire i think not sure. and your gonna want a lot closer to 4in backspacing or less to be safe...

 

So what you're saying is...the smaller the backspacing, the farther the wheel sticks out? What if I go with a 275/70-17? Would that work out?
