Jaretstuff's 2004 4Runner V8 Build Thread
Hello once again yotatech, this will be my 6th build thread on the forum. I have had a Black 95' T100 on 35s and lockers, a 95' Tacoma 4x4, a 90' Turbo 22re. and two 3rd gen 4runners. The time came to make some smart financial decisions and go back to two paid off vehicles and sell my car to eliminate my debt. So the CTS4 is gone and in its place is a 1-owner 2004 4runner Sport 4x4 v8. I was very picky and was set on a 2003/4 4.7 black 4Runner for my next rig. Here is the specs and how it looked when i got it.
1 owner
170k
recent t-belt
all service records
Black on Black
4.7/5 speed auto
Sport
the plans for the T4r is a small lift, wheels and tires, tint and some custom paintwork and light setup.

The first order of business was to take the god awful side steps and mud flaps off. The previous owner was sad to let it go, but he assured me he was getting a new gx470 to replace it.
When I got home I detailed it, debadged the whole thing and greased all the ujoints.

The first mod was to get rid of the ugly sport wheels and stock size all terrains. I got a sweet deal on some brand new XD 128 Machetes in matte grey. I also sourced some 50-60 percent 32/10.5 BFG Mud Terrains off of a friends Rubicon for cheap.
this is what they look like mounted on the new wheels and here they are on the 4runner at stock height.

My lift kit came in I decided on the SR 2inch front spacer and rear 2.5 SDT spacer. The install finished product looked like this.

Finally upgraded the ancient radio in the 4runner.
Kenwood Exceloni got for a killer deal, paired with an amazon bezel kit that fits pretty nice. Note the non JBL stereo has a different bezel than the JBL radio so make sure the right one is ordred.

4runner has been doing good these last couple months... then I backed into a car and ruined my bumper. So I took this opportunity to do some routine maintenance and undercoat my frame. Also to do the new bumper cover and finally finish my Elocker setup in the rear.

4runner should be back together by the end of tonight after a lot of work. I did the whole elocker swap out of an FJ and then did the custom wiring and switch to control it. Also coated my frame to try to get ahead of the inevitable rust. I also did a flowmaster muffler to wake the 4.7 up and I did a colormatched rack and bumper inserts to match my wheels

Well it was put all back together and there was a terrible howling from the rear end. Somehow the pinion crush sleeve was damaged and the pinion depth was all out of wack. So I had to pull it all back apart and that is where we stand as of today. I also got a two post lift so expect to see many more updates and it’s actually enjoyable to work on my 4runner and other vehicles
How it sits after the colormatch and other mods
Up on the lift pre disassembly, pulling the third member out is now a 2 hour job instead of 4-5

My elocker third member was more damaged than we initially thought. The pinion crush sleeve was damaged, both pinion bearings and races were damaged and the oil slinger was either damaged or missing. So this begins my rebuild of my rear third member to be good for another 100k miles that I want to put on this 4runner. So it’s getting:
Trail gear solid pinion spacer
new American made inner pinion bearing and race
new American made outer pinion bearing and race
toyota oil control ring
toyota oil slinger
new SKF pinion seal
and new nut
gonna too it back off with the synthetic mobile I like to run and call it a day.

So great to find your thread!
I have a 2003 4Runner Sport V8 4x4 with 79k miles. I purchased it new and have lightly used it and kept it in great shape. I now want to make it more of an over-lander...not a hardcore off-roader....and use it for long trips with the family which will have some off-roading included, but more dirt tracks and moderately technical. Thus I plan to keep it mostly stock. And here's another similarity....mine is all black also!
Right now I'm thinking of BF Goodrich All-terrain T/A KO2s in stock size. Maybe just the 1" front leveler (as long as it doesn't mess with the XREAS), breathers to allow some water fording, and getting all components tuned-up and ship-shape. This thing has a lot of miles left in it! Only bothersome wear-and-tear is the dash being cracked and bush/branch scratches due to off-road adventures.
Wondering if you have any suggestions/warnings to share. Thank you for your time and consideration!

K02s I had I really enjoyed, much quieter than the KM1s they replaced. I’d recommend going up one size just to help a little in the ground clearance department to a 265/75/17. Only issues I ever had were manifolds and 4x4 actuators ($550 part). Other than rerouting the breathers That’s about all I can think of. If you have any questions feel free to PM me., Jaret

hello! I sold this truck a few months ago but during my year and a half of ownership I can give a pretty good advice.

Many thanks! Yes....just tire shopping and was just investigating what size I can go up to without rubbing....was thinking of 70, but if 75 will work, this is really good!
I've read that manifolds have been an issue. I haven't had this problem thus far, but although almost 18-years-old, with so few miles, some things may be in the future.
Thanks about PMing!
All the best,
Andro
