Stock 94 Pickup Backing Plates Opinion
What is everyone’s opinion on the backing plates and whether or not they are really needed? And by backing plates, I mean the dust shields for the drums. I do not take it off roading, I live in southern Virginia and it will be my daily driver.

Seeing as there is hardly anything even left of what’s on there now, what would that have to do with it? I don’t even know what purpose they serve. They are completely rusted out to the point that they really just thin pieces of what resembles a steel plate looking “thing”. There’s nothing attached them. Am I missing something here?

you sure your talking about the drums? lots of people ditch the caliper dust shields, but the rear isn't really an option. if you can post a picture of what your looking at maybe it would be clearer. your wheels cylinders should be protruding through the backing plate where the hard lines thread in, and your self adjuster lever should be coming out of a rubber boot right beside that as well.

A picture would really help here. Are you sure you are looking at the rear drums and not the front discs?
The backing plate for drum brakes is what holds the whole drum brake assembly together.
Without the backing plates, you have no rear brakes; just a pile of parts.....

Ya I’m a dumbass guys. Instead of getting under there and looking for myself, I took a buddies word for it. After getting under the truck I completely understand now!! Pricy ass part!!! Thank you all so much for you help!! I’ll have plenty more dumb questions coming as I’m trying to get this truck back to solid condition. Again, thanks!!!

Not sure where you are looking for parts, new from the dealer might be expensive. You might have some luck in the classified section here on YotaTech. Im sure someone has done a rear disk brake conversion and has some useable backing plates laying around.

$78 from this online Toyota dealer. https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/sho...rimLevel=18380
You might do better checking the classifieds, (or salvage yards, or eBay), but at some point your time is worth something.
