Vibration, loud, humming sound in 3rd And 5th gear
Good day to one and all!
I am noticing while driving my 91 Toy, their is a heavy, humming, straining noise in
3rd and 5th gear, while all other gears are fine. My question is what is it
and where is coming from? Thank you.

Usually humming/howling noises that go away in 4th gear are due to bearing or gear wear in the transmission. 4th gear is a straight through coupling between the input shaft and output shaft so there is no load on any other gears or bearings.
You really should create a signature line to tell everyone what kind of rig you have, all we know from what you posted is that it's a Toyota, a 1991 and it must be a stick shift if you have 5th gear.

there is no telling how long your transmission may last, I had one with similar noises that was a hunting buggy and it made noise for 10 years until I sold it and it's still going as far as I know.

No, have not, I work out of town, my 17 yr son drives it, he said
it has been like that for the past 2 months now. I did replace the
fluid last year. will it make a difference if I should add now if needed?

If it's leaking enough to cause low fluid levels, you likely would have noticed the mess on the driveway. Unless it is leaking into the transfer case. Check the tcase level as well to make sure it's not over-filled.

OPen fill hole, insert finger. Correct level is "at" the opening. So you fill until it comes out of the hole.
Be prepared to catch a gush from the tcase perhaps, could well be overfilled.

Unfortunately it's a 2 wheel drive, that I am very fortunate to have. I did check the tranny
fluid which was topped off. I also noticed it was in a milky form.
I changed the tranny fluid a year an a half ago. can someone tell me why it is that color?
I decided to swing by AAMCO, only to get a FREE diagnostic, I was told the front bearings
was the problem, and of course I was not Joyed with their prices. well, I wasn't gonna
have them touch my baby anyways, nothing like working on what you love, my 91 toy. I am
now looking for a tranny at a price that I can afford. wish me luck guys, an thanks for your help!!!

If your fluid looks milky it got water in it. Was it milky when you changed it last time? maybe it is residual, maybe the water is from condensation, maybe the breather tube isn't on it right.

I was unaware of the breather tube AKwheeler, thanks. The last It was changed, it was not
that color or in that form. I'll definitely be mindful on the next project. It is my daily driver
so right now i'm looking for a replacement tranny. I can't afford a rebuild right now so i'm
looking for a used one, of course i'll do the job myself. Money tight, being a single father and all. There is a question I wanted
ask. I happened to find one on craigslist for $300 bucks, it was a 89 Toy 2 wheel drive 5 speed, R not
RE. Would that work? what is the brake down when it comes to what year I can use knowing mine is a 91? thanks
again!

Another thought occurred to me, with your 17 year old son driving it you might want to check the rest of your fluids too, maybe ask him if he was puddle hopping or tried to cross a river with a 2wd?
