1999 Tacoma sr5 4x4 3.4 a340f 220k. I noticed something that seemed like a hard shift for the first time since I have owned the pickup I have put 30k on it with no issues. After that weird feeling everything was good shifted normal no sliping no hard shifts. On my way home I noticed that it felt like I was ridding my brakes so I put it in neutral and everything felt OK so I stopped to take a look underneath. Everything looked good, so as I am driving down the road I started to play with different things. Turned off ect didn't change. Turning the overdrive off seems to keep it from feeling like I'm dragging an anchor. Once I got home I checked for dtc's nothing stored or current. I had changed the fluid when I bough it 30k ago. Level is good still red smells good. I'm thinking that it is an electronic issue. I'm just having trouble finding any info to lead towards a diagnostic route. Any and all help would be appreciated. Also watched the vss pid and it matched the speedometer.

Yeah I had just checked the reared I just dropped the pan and found 1/4 to 1/2" long metal pieces in the pan. On my way back from town I got a CEL with a p0755 shift solenoid b. Looks like I have a rebuild in my near future. It wouldn't go into overdrive.

Curious what type of fluid you put in, did you flush the system and transfer all the fluid or a drain and fill of 4L, or drop the pan and refill. Never heard of leaking rear axles causing brakes to drag before, causing rear brakes to become completely non-functional, yes.

This is what I use. I did 2 drain and fills about 6,000 miles apart had 176k then not sure of service hist. Prior to me fluid looked good then and even when I dropped the pan this time. The overdrive planets/sun and ring were all chewed up. Just waiting on my torque converter to show up from itp.

All the clutches looked good and you could still see the print on the friction discs

I just recently dealt with this, when the axle starts leaking through the wheel bearing, the shoes soak up the oil like sponges. That, plus heating up from braking makes them stick to the drum (reason for dragging) and you will be breaking them loose every time you take off from a stop. In my case, the shoes were so stuck it ended up snapping the axle in two.

Interesting story, never seen swollen brake shoes sticking to drums causing axles to snap due to a gear oil leak, who would suspect that chain of events to occur, perhaps your shoes where made of corn..
