While installing my clutch on my 2003 tacoma 4wd v6 SR5, one of the pigtails broke off a sensor. Now the 4wd does not work!!

I found this old thread on here, and it seems like this guy is talking about the same sensor that I need. I just need to know what they sensor is called in order to buy a new one. I have been having trouble finding any useful information.

I have pictures of what I need if it comes to that, but i think you guys could let me know with out pictures. The sensor is located behind the shifter in the transfer case. It had two black wires coming off of it going to a blue connector. I hope this is enough information, and any help is greatly appreciated. I spent like two hours tonight looking for this!!

the pigtail broke off. It does not look like I have enough wire left on the sensor to solder to.

The other thing that confused me was that both wires were black.

Is the sensor just a loop, or does it matter which wire goes where?

If there is a way to fix it, I will gladly go that route. If not, I could not find what the sensor is called in order to buy a new one. Does anyone know what it is called, or have a suggestion on how to fix it?

It's a position switch. Problem is, I don't know that t-case so I don't know WHICH position switch it is. It's a simple contact switch, so there is no polarity.

Since it kills your 4WD, it is probably called the 4WD position switch. Even if it is wrong one, they are all the same, so you could just marry your old pigtail to the new one as the plug is all that is different.

I don't know any way to fix that puppy.

I might have been able to give you more info if you had bothered to give your year, model, engine, drivetrain. Most of us have that in our sig for that reason.

I had all the information about the truck in the original post...

Nevertheless, it is a 2003 Tacoma SR5. Extended cab if that makes a difference.

I would assume they all have the v6, but if not, it's the 3.4L and is a 5spd.

The position switch would indicate your in 4wd, You should still be able to engage 4wd but the indicator light will not work. You will need remove and replace the 4WD position switch/sensor. The Durk is usually pretty observant, perhaps he had a off day or wanted to provide you with a part #, personally I would go to your local dealer and give them a Vin and point out the part and place it on order.

I'll look into it at the dealer. I was hoping to get a part from online to avoid making a trip to the dealer (there is not one locally). Without the part name or number, I guess that is not an obtainable plan...

I don't have a diagram for an '03, I only have a diagram for a '99 Taco so I'm doing a little assumption here. Does your 4wd shifter have a push-button on the side for multi-mode automatic 4wd? Does your 4wd light have just the 4 green wheels, or a fifth orange center lock indicator?

What I believe you are in need of is either #84222D or #84222B

with "B" being closer to the front of the vehicle. The switches are the same, the difference is the plug shape. Those wires are part of the switch, i.e. not a pigtail, that would be the plug section and wire stub that you splice into the harness.

and if I'm right, then there are three switches, two on one side and one on the other, and from your pic, we are talking about the solo one, which is:

in which case the bolded sentence in your post is incorrect. That truck has a vacuum actuated front differential that needs to engage for 4WD to operate. I have to assume that that position switch is what provides the signal to the ADD system that it is time to engage. Then the position switch on the front diff tells the light to come on. So that switch on the TC can definitely disable 4WD.

More details on the drivetrain or the VIN would allow more precision, but this looks good.

It's not the first one, as that is a gray plug:



The second one is a blue plug, but I think you will see mine is a better match. This is yours:


The OP's plug is blue and has two rails on top and one rail on the bottom. Yours and mine also does, but I think the mouth on yours is too narrow and the whole plug is too flat.The OP's has a little offset between the mount clip and the plug terminal as does mine but yours does not. I think mine is a better match to the OP's picture. I am also working off a 2003 Taco EPD. The OP is welcome to hold his plug up next to these two pics and compare. It's what I would do. Image Google the p/n's if you think you need more views of the plug.

Again, any of these will work if the plug is wrong by cutting off the new plug and soldering the original plug on to the new switch.

Still, best is to work off the VIN. I am showing five different frame numbers that match the info I was given and I am too lazy to check them all. I did my best guess.

Durk - Sorry i never posted the VIN. I bought the part that you suggested and it worked like a charm. I am So glad to have 4x4 back!
