1985 4Runner

I’ve been looking for another Toyota since moving here and came across one right here in Comox. It’s an SR5, is the first year of the 22re and has 393,330 km at time of purchase on 12/30/17. This one has a fairly fresh rebuild and injectors, driveline seemed pretty solid on the drive home and has a good, solid frame and floorboards. I have a few issues to take care of:

Battery/brake light came on (dead alternator) when I was driving it home last night
Clutch needs to be bled
Has a small exhaust leak at the manifold, I noticed a broken stud today
Heater blows good, not a lot of heat
Lots of wires under the hood that have brittle casing, need to replace them
Horn doesn’t work, probably the pin not contacting the horn ring like my last Toyota
Interior is what you’d expect for a 30 year old vehicle, I’m on the hunt for a donor vehicle
Speedo, tach and all the gauges work - even the clock - but no dash lights.
Wiring looks terrible
Seats are decent, I want newer ones without 30 years of farts in them
Tires are mud tires and sound like it too, they need to go. Replaced with 33 x 1250R15 BFG KO2s

Some interior shots, at some point I have to find a donor with a good interior and replace the carpet.

Pulled the seat cover back to show the seats, they were replaced by the PO at some point

Nice find. I don't love those wheels, but an 85 sr5 is a dream truck.

Second that.
Wiring under the intake manifold had been through so much especially the crimps for injector to ECU wires. Good idea to rewire if feasible.
May I also recommend adding a starter relay to help extend the life of ignition switch and prevent "C.O.R. click but no crank" issue. Then lose the gutter mounted roof rack. Fiberglas gutter is weak and IF the seam seal on the cab gutter breaks, it will cause a leak.

Cool rig, definitely looks like it could use some updating. The 30 years of farts made me laugh out loud.

The rack came off day 1. I’ve replaced the alternator and it’s charging great, reverse flushed the heater core and have heat now. I will tackle the broken exhaust studs next and deal with the rest of my list.

Bonus pic of our cat. She keeps dragging this box out of recycling-usually when we are sleeping - and just hangs out in it

Tracking down the exhaust leaks. 2 broken studs, the rest of the nuts were pretty loose. Also no muffler clamp just before the muffler, picked one up today

Horn doesn’t work, took the steering wheel off, cleaned both contact surfaces and used some dielectric grease and horn works.

These vacuum lines were not routed properly and idle has been terrible. Google has a good vacuum diagram, all fixed.

looks like a great base.
I like the wheels, always like the turbine style.
the front bumper, not so much

On your pathfinder rear tire swingout, I would recommend pulling the interior panel on the right rear quarter panel and see how the original owner mounted it. if done wrong you will end up with cracked sheet metal

You don't have to have a rear license plate light?

Front bumper is a valiant attempt by someone to fab one up. The welds are terrible and it’s crooked. I’ve removed the square led lights and the taped together wiring, next is the fog lights/wiring and then the bumper. I’ve ordered a rear license plate holder and light from amazon.

Nice rig. Love the tire carrier, haven't seen one on an 85.

Second that, and yes, I'd like to get a swing-out carrier like that, too.

The previous owner has the original SR5 chrome wheels, and a spare tire in their shed which I haven’t picked up yet . And another hood with a scoop almost as wide as the hood, it looks ridiculous.

Nice truck.
Is the tire carrier's bolted to the quarter panel?

Exhaust leaks - gone

We are getting ready to move to Campbell River in may to a new place so I haven’t done a lot to the 4Runner. One thing I took care of is the exhaust leaks - and there were lots - and it sounds great. I ended up buying a new manifold, all new studs, exhaust manifold gasket, flange gaskets and a heat shield which was missing from the old manifold.

Did the Marlin HD shift lever ball seat and lever socket, 2nd Toyota I’ve done this on. If you’ve never done this; do it.

Tackled the rear brakes, bell crank was busted inside the LR drum, scavenged one from a local fellows spare rear diff. New drums, wheel cylinders, hardware kit and lots of anti-seize
