Radiator fan replacement

Hey guys my radiator fan needs replaced on my 1990 Toyota pickup with the 3.0. I was just wondering if there were any better options than the gross looking plastic stock fan

Red face

How did you break your fan??

I am sure if you search you can find a fancy fan that costs big bucks and does the same or less moving of air

You could research Electric fans but they tend to fail at the worst time

It's only ugly because it's almost 30 years old. Plus you can't see it when running and surrounded by the shroud. I say spend the $80 or so dollars on another Aisin fan and wait another 30 years and see if they have cooler looking fans by then.

A new (stock) fan would really dress it up!
Amazon Amazon

('course, you could buy a lot of fuzzy dice for $80, just sayin')

well the biggest thing about it is the shroud like thing on the fan itself not only do I not like the looks I feel like itd be putting unnecessary stress on the fan mount plus I was just curious if there were any suggestions for better performance

So you have THIS https://www.ebay.com/itm/1636165010-...-/182596869512 style fan?

The online dealers https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/sho...rimLevel=18292 show both 16361-65010 and 16361-38010 as fitting our trucks. I have no idea if they are really interchangeable. If they were, I would be more likely to choose the one with the "shroud like thing." I doubt the stress on the fan is significant at all, but it looks like it would do a much better job of cooling. And lack of cooling really stresses everything.

The shroud part of the fan shouldn't be putting unnecessary stress on other components. I think Toyota would not have designed the fan like that if it were to cause something else fail.

However, there have been instances were the plastic gets old and brittle and the fan breaking apart (~30 years is probably twice the life expectation of the truck when they were built).

The stock fan and fluid clutch setup is actually a really good cooling setup. Many people who "upgrade" to an electric fan struggle to achieve the same amount of air flow that the stock fan can put out.

I don't have a 3VZ-E so I have not looked into alternative mechanical solutions.

If you are worried about the fan becoming brittle, I would just replace it with a new Aisin fan (OEM fan).

The ring on that style fan makes it more efficient, it keeps the air from sliding off the ends of the blades similar to the vertical section on the tip of an airplane wing.
