96 4runner electrical problems

Hey guys I'm trying to de-tweakerify this 4runner I picked up for cheap after it had set for like 12 years. It has no dash lights or heater control lights and all the hot wires that go to the stereo are dead. Who ever had it before had wired in some hokey ass lights as a band aid fix. There's power to the rheostat in and out. The harness that plugs into the instrument cluster has power to a few of the connectors. The ground wire that goes to the stereo harness does not go to ground. I ground that wire to the chassis and made no difference. I think it's a grounding issue but I haven't been able to run it down. Any advice as to what else to check? Of course I checked all the fuses and made sure power was coming into the fuse port. TIA..

In all honesty your best bet is to get a copy of the 96 4Runner EWD Electrical Wiring Diagrams without that your going to get real frustrated .

You have checked that the bulbs are in fact Good ??

And the Rheostat changes the voltage as it turns ??

Going to check the bulbs with a meter when I get home. Checked a couple and they appear to be ok. I put my test line on the connectors on the plug to the rheostat. Power going in and out. The test light is a little dimmer coming out. When I rotate the knob it does not change the brightness of the test light.

Time to upgrade to a Meter much more useful .

It is good to know voltages and resistance at times in troubleshooting

Welp,,, turned it was the rheostat. Not sure why I got power coming out with the test light but put a meter on there and it showed no power coming out. Unplugged it and put a jumper in and bam.. dash lights. And then once I got the correct wiring diagram for the stereo harness that problem was solved.
Still need to see why I don't have heater control (new bulb installed) and the lighter doesn't work. Power antenna doesn't work either but I hotwired that and it came up so good for now. Got tunes and dash lights so pretty happy right now..
