Well after years of hunting, tracking, chasing...the search has finally ended. Call it a mid life crisis or just fulfilling a childhood dream of owning the Marty Mcfly truck. Either way, the time has come.
I am starting this building with my newly acquired 1985 Toyota SR5 Xtra Cab, 4x4. The previous owner did alot of the hardwork, which I am grateful for, which include: rebuilt 22RE motor, fresh paint job, new bumpers cleaned up interior.
I think this is a great base to start from. Here are some side by side comparisons, next to my 2000 Toyota Tacoma.
There are several things I need to do to get this going such as fixing the leaking knuckles, stabilizer and shock replacement,cataytic converter and O2 Sensor replacement, upholstery update, window tint, rollbar, bumpers etc. So first thing to tackle is the cataytic converter and O2 sensor to get this boy to pass California Smog Emissions.
Congrats on the new truck. It's looks to be in really good shape. The side by side shots really where interesting to look at. Keep us posted on what you do with it.
I did not waste time getting this project started. 1st thing 1st. Get this truck registered to me. Although, it was previously registered and passed smog in Utah. California Emissions is ton more stricker. Lets say, I failed smog on the first....and second attempt. All in all, I had the ERG lines cleaned out, had to drop in a new Cat and O2 sensor replacement. But he is officially California legal.
The next thing I did was add some cosmetic changes. I added tint all around the windows. I liked the way it looked in the movie and I think I makes it pop more in person.

I was able to easily identify the rims as US Wheel Model 94 Black-15x8
I have a local rim and tire shop I have been using for years and they were able to order and swap the rims out for me
The great thing about living in Southern California is that I went to the local High School (Whittier High School), where Back to the Future was filmed.
So I decided to take a update picture next to the Schools auditorium where George Mcfly knocked out Biff.

One question I am wrapping my head around is the fender trim. It is kinda hard to tell in the movie photos whether the truck does not have the trim or does but it is painted black.
I am considering removing them completely or powder coating or just painting them black. Any ideas?
The one with the banner definitely has them painted black. The one with Marty driving I don't think has them at all

Thanks for the input. It appeared that way to me as well that the one with the banner has them painted black and in BTTF2 they are not there. I will see how the paint underneath the trim looks and its discolored or not matching with the body, I will go forward with painting the trim.
In other news, I scored in Craigslist. A guy out here was selling the front and rear Smittybuilt bumpers. Both are in solid shape with a few dings that a local fabrication shop can clean up, straighten and powder coat. So I am really looking forward to getting them redone.

Mail call. Not much progress, but I got my hands the 6" KC light covers and 5x7 amber KC Fog lights. The fog lights, will need to be painted black, but that should be an easy task. My next mission is tracking down the 5x7 KC Fog lightcovers. From what I heard, those are much harder find....let the hunting continue
Locating the Smittybuilt roll bars has been a mission. One that I gave up on. Granted they are some in Arizona, New Mexico, but to have it shipped or drive out to realize they are far to damage to fix would be disappointing. So I have opted to get them fabricated by a local off road shop. In addition, they are removing the refurbishing the ones I found, removing tow hitch, cleaning up the bumpers and powder coating them. 1 stop shop for this guy.
The shop could only fabricate 2 inch piping, instead of the original 3 inches. But in all honestly, I think the 2 inch looks a bit more proportional to this truck size and I am beyond excited to see the bumpers cleaned up and everything powder coated and installed.
The next step I tackled was pretty simple and that was adding the front turn signal lights. I removed them from the old bumper. In attempt to keep the same color scheme, I opted to paint the turn signals black using Rustoleum spray paint.
When I had the front bumper refurbished. I had them weld on metal tabs the width of the turn signals screw hole so I could use them as mounting brackets. The tabs hold the signals on solid.
I repeated the same process for repainting the front 5x7 KC Fog lights. In addition, I had the fabricators add the tabs to mount the lights
