1991 4 runner thinking of going to 3.4

So once I finish the headgasket on my nissan car I'm thinking of swapping in a 3.4 motor into our 1991 4 runner. The auto transmission was just rebuilt last year so I'll be keeping the stock transmission.

I have a few questions before starting ordering items.

I've read through most of not all of the posts regarding the swap so I think I have a fairly good handle on things.

In speaking with toyonlyswaps they mentioned that the easiest swap would be to find a T100 1997-1998 motor, harness and ecu. It doesn't matter if the ecu is 4x4 or 4x2.

They mentioned that this motor in particular has the right oil pan, has the dipstick already in the right position, the ecu will talk to the stock transmission, and the 97s and 98s are better able to handle the supercharger if we decide to add that.

Does everything there sound correct? If it is, then I'll begin searching for that specific combination.

Also one fear I have in this swap is the amount of fabrication (ie welding custom metal work) involved. Some swaps have quite a bit of fab involved while some others seem to just drop in the motor.

The actual physical swap sounds intimidating but all the swaps I've read seem to suggest that the actual physical swap isn't that difficult. The wiring has me a little concerned, but I have installed a few car alarms so I think I'll be ok.

How are most doing the wiring? I think I've seen everything from just re-pinning the stock harness to removing everything. I think it would be the easiest to repin the harness or just buy the harness from toyonlyswaps. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Good luck finding a t100 3.4, there aren't many of those around here. You already have the 3.0 oil pan (same as the t100 3.4) and the oil pickup out of the 3.0 can be used, but you have to modify the 3.4 baffle. But you can buy the correct t100 oil pickup so you don't have to modify the baffle. And the dipstick can be ordered along with it. it doesn't cost that much, just go to 1sttoyotaparts or toyotapartseast. You'll need the 3.0 oil pressure sender off of your block as well.

There are some good threads about wiring. Or you can work a little overtime and spring for the toyonlyswaps harness. Really, its up to you and your comfort level. I personally don't feel comfortable trying to read diagrams to get it right. Luckily I have a friend (and moderator) that knows what to do so my swap will have a repinned harness.

So aside from them being difficult to find (I may have found one) is everything that was mentioned from toyonlyswaps correct?

In terms of wiring I think I probably can do it, I'm just questioning if I want to spend the time to do it. I've installed a few alarms, and even had to troubleshoot ignition problems in our nissan before so I've had to deal with wiring before, it's just not my favorite thing in the world to do.

If your runner is a 3.0 you're in luck. The oil pan has the same bolt patterns as the 3.4 so you can use that if you cant find a 97T100. The info on the dipstick is correct. Later years have to be drilled.

I purchased my wiring harness from offroadsolutions. Mike is still taking orders. I just recieved mine sometime last month. I believe he still has other parts for sale also. Check out the website:

T100 biggest plus is tranny pass side drop instead of driver. 3.4 is a 3.4. Running the 3.0 automatic will be a waste of time.

Since the transmission was just rebuilt a year ago, unfortunately I can't justify tossing the tranny.

That and I'd like to keep the stock exhaust layout. I'm aware that if/and when we return to california I'll have to run the stock crossover to the cat in order to pass the ref. But until then...

Anyone else confirm that a 1997-98 T100 auto is THE one I want? I'm pretty sure I found one.

1998 T100 4x4 Auto with only 86,000 miles on it with a 6 month warranty on it. The complete package will include the harness, the engine, alternator, starter, charcoal canister and the ECU.

Sound good?

Sounds pretty good. You'll need the intake while you are at it.

Yes that is correct as far as getting it run your transmission. You will also need all the evap stuff from the donor t100 as they all run of the body harness instead of the main engine harness.

So do I need the body harness as well? or just the main engine harness?

Engine harness. You will wire your evap into your current body harness.

I currently have a 97 4runner auto harness. and I have the tranny pigtail off of an 89 4runner.

Those are going to be repinned to work with my 22re body harness.

If you have the conversion wire harness made it will be in there. When I purchased my harness everything was in there including the OBDII port. Took about 2 weeks to be made. check out offroadsolutions.com for TONS of info regarding your swap.

You may want to go the easy way and have the harness done. The t100 evap stuf comes out of the body harness on the driver side. all tacoma's and 4runners with 5vz motors will have that all in the main engine harness.

3.4 swap cost

I've read through most of the swap threads and some of them do list pricing for the swaps, but quite a few of them are a bit dated.

If you guys don't mind, what are most people paying for their swaps parts ie motors, ecu, harness etc?

Thanks in advance

Also anyone know if I should get the AC evacuated before? And how difficult is it to get the AC working after the swap?

One more thing I noticed in some of the earlier posts was some difficulty with the powersteering hose, newer swap threads haven't really mentioned this problem so I'm wondering if it's still an issue?

If you get the entire truck you can usually get everything you need for less than $1000.
Otherwise, you're looking at $1200-$2000 from a salvage yard for the swap.
Heck, theres a guy selling a 4runner w/ supercharger and everything you need here on yotatech for $3500/OBO.

Power steering and AC are not a big deal if you have the donor vehicle. Otherwise you are going to have to buy hoses for steering and in cab AC parts.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll have the donor vehicle, but I am buying the entire swap from a junkyard.

Does the powersteering hose from the T100 fit without modification? I can always ask them to throw that in as well.

Also I wasn't aware that I needed to swap any in cab parts for the AC to work?
