When you got each plug off, also short the 2 contacts in the plug and see what happens. If there is only 1 contact in the plug, try grounding that contact and see what happens.

Besides the three hoses under the intake, there is a water pipe that bolts directly into the intake manifold from underneath and is sealed by an o-ring. This is in a 92, not sure if an 88 has that?

I lost one speed on my motor, forget which one. Resistor didn't fix it. Ended up the switch itself was faulty and I just had to clean all the contacts & make a minor adjustment to the sliding contact...
