SP2 has been officially realeased, and working fine on my computer.

It is smoooooooooooth sailing on my two desktops.
Not one glitch other than the Security Center telling me I did not have anti virus software loaded. It did not reconize Mcafee 6. Upgraded to version 8 of Mcafee and it is fine. |
Yup no problems. Had a few issues with the beta version. But all seems good with the final release.
You need to make sure there no spyware on your system on order for SP2 to be downloaded for Microsoft. Its a Big file and takes at least 45Min to install. |
if you play counter strike over a LAN dont install SP2. i dont know about other games, but with CS, you cant connect to other games on the LAN.

I play CS. and was able to get it to work. You need to go into the firewall setting and add an exception for CS to run

a) The SP2 that you would download today is the same one that you would have downloaded two weeks ago, so anything that was broken then is still broken. That said, I have it running on 6 machines and it's fine. b) If your machine is "working great" then what do you expect SP2 to do for you? Do you want to install it just to get rid of the warning? If so, then you might want to just ignore the warning forever... :) If you haven't seen the other SP2 thread here, then it might be worth a quick-scan: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f98/windows-xp-sp2-advised-38474/ There're some decent words in there about things that you might have to tweak once it's installed.

The worst event I had since installing Win XP SP2 was a device conflict between graphics and IDE to PCI. Went into safe mode and made the correction. It was very weird.
There was nagging problem with USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. XP SP2 wouldn't sense a new USB device. On another machine XP SP2 downgraded the USB to 1.1 when sensing the USB device. The device is a 2.0 and was working fine prior to the service packet installation. |
Been running SP2 on my laptop for several weeks and no issues, just have to tweak some firewall and IE security settings for downloads and needed pop-ups.

The Register's XP SP2 review on XP Pro

Good review, great ideas and lock-down suggestions for newbies and seasoned users alike. I've printed the list out and checked off those changes that I've performed so that I have a point of reference if anything does blow up due to the changes.

Yeup... Very nice and honest review.
Don't go to SP2 if you don't need to. ;) |
Today my computer with with SP2 started playing the last CD left in the drive at boot up. I went to check the Tweak UI settings to disable Autorun and it's gone. This is the first I've noticed the Tweak UI deletion, and don't know if it's OK to reinstall on SP2. I'll try it and do a System Restore if needed.
How can I tell what version of USB is running? I went to check in Device Manager/USB Controllers but couldn't tell for sure. There's a long string of gibberish in the Details tab that might mean something when deciphered. |

Is this how you were trying to disable auto run?
1. Navigate to My Computer 2. Right-click on the floppy, CD, or DVD drive you want to adjust 3. Select Properties from the context menu that appears 4. Select the Autorun tab 5. You can select what you want windows to do when a disc is inserted based on the content that is detected on the disc. |
Thanks Mossback74. I checked the Autorun (called AutoPlay there) per your directions and all drives were set to "Prompt me each time to choose an action", the other options were grayed out. So anything in any of the drives should stay off, but that suddenly changed to run at boot up. I have to shut down the CD to get to the desktop now. In Tweak UI I think it's called Autorun and it allowed either an on/off choice for run on CD insertion. I had it off before the Tweak UI utility vanished.
My MB is definitely USB 2.0. I didn't notice any USB peripheral performance hit on SP2 install, but wanted to check to see if the actual version is still 2.0. |
