Showing a DVD on a windows 98 machine
Ok, what do I need to do and buy to be able to see a DVD on my desktop. It is a windows 98SE with a cd/rw bin currently in use. Do I just need to get a DVD/rw in its place? Or do I need to do anything more major to the tower? Thanks

You just need a DVD drive and a program to play the dvd.
Check out www.Newegg.com for dvd/dvd burners... |
Cool thanks

Checked out that site and some of them says for windows 2000 and later and some say nothing at all. Do I assume that when they don't address this then it is ok for my system?

Boom baby. They work great, I sell them at work (and install them). PM me if you need driver help, and/or if you are looking to do some upgrades to the machine. |
I got an ordinary dvd rom drive it came with player software and works fine on my win95se machine at home.

Ok I found one that I like on tigerdirect but after reading about it, they mention something about SATA drive. Now will I need a special cable or hookup to get this thing to run properly? Sorry but I don't know a whole lot about computers. This is the one.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...9552&body=MAIN

If your PC is running Win 98 it more than likely only has a PATA or IDE bus. SATA drive is not going to work for you. You could possibly invest in a SATA controller card if you really want to use that drive but I don't even know if they make them or how expensive they are.

Bingo.. If you upgrade to windows media player (they should still have a 98 version out) it should work. However the basic issue you have is the drive will work, its the software to play it that may not work. |
I believe that I have windows media player already on the computer so it should work then, correct? Well I went and got the one from newegg, I'll let you know if it works. Thanks for the link CJM.

In Windows 98 using Media Player there is an executable already there for playing DVD's. I believe it's in the C:\windows\system folder, it's been a while.
I used it in the past and it actually worked quite well. You will still probably need a decoder, when I installed my DVD player "back in the day" it came with a decoder card " Encore Dxr-3" so no software needed. |
