Possible slave HD

my old HD crapped out on me a long time ago... got jacked somehow and wouldnt even load anything when turned on..... just would have a blinking " _ " in white on a black screen... ultimately, i removed it and got a new hd.... well today cleaning up my room found it... and was thinking, is it possible for me to toss this back in my computer as a slave?

it has a little picture on it that looks like this... i think i need to add a or remove the jumpers, but not exactly sure where to do it, due to the way the pic is setup....

to me, it looks like for the slave, a jumper needs to be hooked up to 2,3,5 but the actual 2 pin isnt colored in like the others.... i think i need to also add power to the drive and connect the big ribbon as well correct? what about setting the new hd i am running ot recognize the new drive?

Based on the diagram it looks like you just need to jump 3 to 5 for slave, and hang the extra jumper off 2 just as place to keep it.

You need to plug the hard drive into the middle plug on the IDE ribbon and plug the 4 contact molex power connecter into the drive, the PC should pick it up if your drive is functional. (do all this with the PC unplgged of course.

Hope this helps.

do i need to move any jumpers on the current master? someone on anotehr board said i might have t odo that

You shouldn't, it would be set to either master or cable select, as long as it's plugged in on the end of the ide ribbon it'll consider itself the master drive.

Instead of just deleting.. try formating the hard drive.. just remember to pick the right one... :)

Yup. Formatting is the only way to go. Yank all teh data you want to keep off of it, and then just format it. It's the safest route, to make sure anything nasty on there is really GONE, not just hiding someplace.

all is said and done, the moderator of the computer forum @ www.explorerforum.com , the "other" truck site i am always on walked me through everything in AIM.. here is what i did..... i removed the partition using fdisk... then created a new one for disk 2 .. he said if i didnt it could cause conflicts later.. i then reformatted it, and ran scandisk.... i had 5 bad sectors on it according to scandisk that i ran in dos..... everything is good now though... and it has mp3 and jpg backup storage on it now....
