More HP from the PC
 

On my motherboard in the BIOS is a hyperthread or something option.
It's not the hyper chip thing for the 2.4 Intel chip, that's already activated.
It's something else, and I turned it on yesterday.

My Asus P4P800 mobo has overclocking capabilites via the BIOS, but I am to :chicken: to try that right now as I hear you can do damage from the heat it can produce.
The options are 5, 10, 20 & 30% over stock.

However there is another option called "turbo mode" that can be turned on in there.
Right now it's set to auto.
It states you can turn it onto turbo, and if the system hangs or becomes unstable, it's easily turned off again in the BIOS.

What exactly does this turbo mode do if it's not overclocking the chip the other way?

turbo changes the memory CAS speeds, i believe.


if you have a high quality ram, you could try it. but i would just leave it. i tried it with my cheap-o ram, and it busted my mother board. i had to RMA it and get a new one.

Okay, here's what you do...

Buy an good cooling unit. Watercooling, freon if you could swing it... :D

And then start overclocking at 30%!!!

Speaking of PC's.... I'm thinking of ditching my laptop and getting a new desktop. My dad want's a laptop, I want a desktop..... I'm trying to work out a deal so he gets my laptop, and buys me a new desktop. This is what I'm looking at right now...

I like the reviews I've read about it..... I could build my own computer... but I'm kinda torn. Because I know that with a Falcon computer I'm paying more, but I get much better reliability. And they do TONS of tuning on their computers to make them THE best bang for buck in the world of gaming.

I did not do the overclocking thing, as I would not try it unless my case was watercooled to take the heat.

But I did try the turbo mode setting and my PC quit on me :eeek:
When I hit F10 to save the BIOS and rebooted, the monitor went into sleep mode and the PC had a blank screen.

You can imagine my terror as I have only had this thing for less than a month now.
I am fully backed up though thanks to my new DVD burner.

I let the PC sit for a few minutes and booted again.
A message came up that said overclocking failed.
I did not overclock it, I only choose the turbo mode.

It said to hit F1 to enter the BIOS, or hit F2 to load the defaults.
I hit F1 and went in and took it off of turbo mode.
All if fine & dandy now.

L33, what exactly did it do to your mobo?
I am not sure of the brand of RAM I have, I wil call the shop up, as I plan on adding a GIG to the 512 I have now.
It's PC3200 DDR SDRAM for 800 FSB boards.

some crazy thing happened and it slowed down any internet connection i had to null, like it would barely transfer any data. this happened after i woke up one morning to find my computer with a blue screen of death (on windows 2000 even). i couldnt connect to any internet site, it would try, and sometimes half connect, but always failed, including AIM.

anyway. i tried new network cards, formatted, reinstalled my OS, put bios to defualt, everything. being a computer tech for 7 years, i knew it was a hardware problem. sent back in my mobo, got a new one, and all is well now

Hopefully I did not hurt anything for those few minutes mine would not boot.

Mine is under warranty, but I'd still hate for it to be down.
I have rather gotten use to this new rig over my PIII 500.
