you will not be able to install VS10 on such an old OS, VS08 has a chance but I doubt it. XP simply can't install the framework required because it came along after XP support was retired.

For VS 10 service pack 1: System requirements Supported operating systems: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-Bit x86), Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 editions, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3
Platform compatibility and system requirements When upgrading from Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 to the next release of Visual Studio you will take advantage of a refreshed and simplified environment with enhanced performance without any additional hardware requirements. Some of these core enhancements make use of capabilities that are only present in the latest versions of Windows and might require you to upgrade to a supported operating system. The system requirements for most of the products in the next release of Visual Studio are: Supported operating systems
The next release of Visual Studio provides cutting-edge tools and technologies to create apps that take advantage of the latest platforms capabilities. Visual Studio 2012 will also target earlier platforms such as Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 so you can create new apps or modernize existing apps that execute on earlier versions of Windows while leveraging the enhanced development tools, quality enablement and team collaboration capabilities in Visual Studio 2012. |

Dx9 would be the most likely hardware problem with this install, but you would be notified that your system isn't up to the task by the installation wizard...plus it's not likely.
Chances are you have viruses. A lot of viruses will shut down executables to thwart cleaning tools from clearing them out. XP is vulnerable to them because of the lack of User Account Control. I would do a fresh install of Windows7 or use the Recovery disk that came with your computer. You will want to burn any pictures or files you want to save to a cd before you do this. It sounds like you're probably not going to have luck cleaning the computer yourself, so this is the most effective fix and I am 100% you will fix it this way. |
