data transfer between computers?

Hi

I want to back up some of my files on an old Win98SE computer.

Is there a simple program that will facilitate this? I am hoping to use USB to connect the computers to one another.

win98 has an accessory 'direct-connect' or something like that. Should just require a cross-over ethernet cable & plug the NIC cards together. Not sure about doing this with USB, i never tried.

What is the new computer? It might be easier to physically move the hard drive into the new PC & copy them over directly. I've wasted hours & hours before messing with LAN setup on win98 pc's before.

I want to transfer files from my WinXP Home to the old computer which has Win98SE. I found some info on the net about Direct Cable Connection, which seems fairly straightforward. I need to find a cable that will work. I have some around somewhere....

Ahhh, sounds like a plan. I don't think dropping the HD from the XP box in the 98 box would work very well. Not sure about the direct connect working with XP, if it turns into a headache you might want to buy a cheap little hub for $20 or so.

Already have a hub. So you are saying that I already have all the cables that I need? Just connect through the hub? I know I have a long USB cable somewhere...just gotta locate it.

An ethernet hub (or switch, or bridge) should work. Don't think a USB hub will, but I'm often wrong.

Hub and straight thru ethernet cables is probably the easiest. USB would require a special cable designed to connect two PCs, I think they may be called null USB cables (named after the old null modem cables to connect two pcs via serial cables) or maybe they are called peer to peer cable. Anyway, networking(ethernet) the PCs is for sure the way to go.
