Guy's I have this certain "full length video" that a friend burned onto CD for me. The problem is I was able to view it for a brief moment at work, until I thought it would be better watched at home. Anyway, when I treid to watch it at home, MP9 said it was unbale to find a suitable codec. I have MP9 at work and it took it fine. How can I find out what codec I need and where to get it?

My guess is it's either DivX or XviD. You can get them both here:

If you could give the file extension it would narrow it down though.

One thing I almost forgot about. There's a program called GSpot that will tell you what codec is required to play a video. You can get it here:

A head's up on the free DivX codec/player... It's loaded with adware.

Run AdAware or another removal tool and I'll betcha' you'll find something lurking. It'll be fine once you get rid of the additional payload.


UPDATE: I have a clarifier for this issue. The free DivX codec that is adware laden (it has Gator in it) is the free PRO package. The standard decoder (available here) is adware free.

Mark, I have that linked on "YotaTech on the web" here, and I have installed it many times on my PCs here.

Never has Spybot picked it up on my end, and my dats are always up to date.
Wonder why it's not putting spyware on my end?

We had a piece of DivX encoded media come around work the other day (_for_ work! :)) and in order to do "comparison shopping" we installed the codec on a number of reviewer's machines. These are tightly controlled machines off of the general corp net.

AdAware "popped positive" on all of them, and we knwo they were clean before.

I can sacrifice my box to see what happens... Gimme a few minutes.

Got it.

The difference is that we're installing the "Free" Pro Codec. It comes nicely bundled with Gator.

I'll update my post above to make that distinction.

I use to recommend to folk's here to get the free one, and to not install the player, as you do not need it since the codec update MS Media Player.

The free one all the way to the right of the column says "add supported", so I take it that is adware & Gator doing their harm.

I'm not sure if that is the one I have installed in the past, or the one now that is a link on the page below the features that says "Standard DivX Codec(FREE)"

I did not save the file to my PC the last time I installed it like I do most files I DL.

OK, after further reading, I believe I am safe, as I have never had a pop up ad from them, and here is the page that describes their add supported one.

This must be new, as the one in the past I always got came with the player, but I choose in the setup to not install it, and only the codecs.
