I just bought the Magellan 500 unit last week, love it. Found a great deal at Fry's Electronics for 650 with a 50 rebate.

I dont understand, why cant you just get one of those handheld ones? Then you can use it when your driving and when you are walking or hiking!!

what's the best handheld one? i've seen lots of those little Garmins that people take on hiking/climbing trips ... they look pretty neat. then again, some NAV systems talk and tell you to make illegal u-turns ... and that makes for good entertainment whilst navigating. :D

the Garmin ETrex Vista is awesome! get it, NOW :)

last monday i was driving around burbank looking for Bob's Big Boy. i knew it was around there, just not exactly sure. i punched in "bob's big boy" in my GPS and it led me straight to it. :D

I have the 700 model and this unit kicks butt.

I too have the eTrex Vista.
I love it. It has saved us from getting lost so many times. Once we were snowshoeing in Mammoth and really could not decide which way to go until we consulted the breadcrumbs on the gps. Pretty cool being on the dunes in Pismo and saying "basecamp is that way."

If I were only using it in a vehicle I would probably get something else, but there are so many other great uses. Has anyone done any
geocashing ?

BTW Charles, did you get one of their great chocolate shakes?????

good idea, the reason i want(ed) the Street Pilot was just for wheeling, (when out of state) i just dont go hiking, did enough of that in the army, lol, but now that the kids are getting bigger, and wanting to go camping and playing in the woods, im kinda looking at them, ive seen some nice set-ups, in a few rigs with the hand helds, id like to see more pics..... but i do like the big color screen the street pilot has.

yeah, you guys have cool ones, but how many have a FRS GMRS Radio built in and have cababilities of transmitting your location to another unit?

hehe, I love my Rhino. The only gripe is no option for external antenna, but it does pretty well mounted on my A-Pillar.

I have a Garmin V, which is OK. I love the Garmin units and also the TOPO maps which you can upload on it. I am getting a laptop to connect to it for a bigger display, as it is great to see trails and points of intrest around you while you go out on a trail.

My suggestion to anyone that is looking at buying a new unit is to find one that has USB connectivity and can also take extra memory, oh and is able to work with (upload maps to unit) TOPO maps as well for wheeling. I prefer Garmin, others prefer other brands. The V I have lacks USB and extra mem which makes it a pain sometimes, will have to wait for some $$$ before I get a new one.

I have the Garmin V as well, and I have the same complaints about the lack of memory. I hooked it up tp my laptop for my trip cross country, and the tracking feature is AWESOME! Showed me where I was and everything, such a neat little toy. The size makes it good for hiking, but then I don't want to drop or lose a $500 piece of equipment outside!

Color would be nice, but I need to get out of debt first before I buy any more toys.
