CB Radio suggestions?

I recently got my 07 4x4 access cab Taco with towing package (of course):D
I've been doing some solo exploring on trails and wheelin with buddies and would like to have some communication for emergencies and talking with guys on the trail. I know ham radio is ideal, especially for emergency situations, but I'm not ready to go that rout yet. I just wanted to see what set up (CB radio and antenna) some of you guys are using and how the coverage and quality of communication is. Definitely appreciate any feedback!!

all depends on how much you wanna spend. seems like most people including me have the uniden 520 xl for the radio and then go with what you want for antennas. i've got a wilson 5000 magnet antenna that's been working great. check out walcottcb.com. very helpful and lots of stuff. give em an email w/ suggestions.

Hey Tdubbs 05 where is the speaker located on that model? I was just looking at the Cobra 18 and liked that the speaker was located on the front of the system.
Thanks for the site, checking it out now!

IMO the cobra 25 or 29 is the best for general usage for not too much money.

I've been reading a lot on the Cobras, they definatly seem like a great brand. What makes the 25 29 so good for general purpose?
I was looking at the Uniden 510, which i've heard is a great deal. I really like the size of it, was told it sounds really good when properly tuned, it has the same coverage as the bigger CB radios, and cost less. So why not!?!

Now I need to figure out where to mount it. If anyone has pics or suggestions for this I'd appreciate any ideas. I have an 07 4x4 access cab Tacoma.

Thanks for the feedback

ive had the best experience with cobras when peaked and tuned.
they definately are a great radio, every new semi ive seem with a cb come with a cobra.

they are also the easist to kind kits and instructions for if you wish to "illegaly" mod them to increase reciving and transmiting power.

In these smaller rigs I really like my Cobra 75WXST, its all controlled by the hand unit, that has a removable plug you can place on the dash or under the seat :D

I've got a Midland 1001z. It basic, cheap, small and works perfect.

Just got the Cobra 19 Ultra III, mounted it where the ashtray was and it fit well and looks good. Small enough to fit was the key, cause I wanted a bigger one but aside from mounting it where my radio is or putting on the roof it aint working..

AH641D, I was looking into the Cobra 75WXST and was wondering if that radio can be peaked and tuned as the other mobile radios? I definatly like the size and the fact I don't have to mount it, big plus!
Appreciate all the feed back

im pretty sure the digital type radios cannot be peaked and tuned at all, the most you can do it get your SWR as low as possible

I havent looked into it yet, but I kinda doubt it for the reasons muddog stated. Thou it works great for me, and i still need to SWR tune...

The Cobra 29 ltd can be modded to have extra channels put in so you can slide between channels and if your friends get one and do the same you guys can run the side channels and not interfer with people on the regular channels. Plus almost evey cb repair shop in the world can do a nice tune up on it and get you about 30 watts of brodcast power so you can really get out in a sticky situation and they are tough as hell.
