Tweeters in Door Pillars Are AWESOME!!!

i bought my tacoma and noticed instantly the stereo system was probably the worst i ever heard. so i bought a kenwood head unit and some middle of the line kenwood 6 1'2''s for the doors. installed all that and was very disappointed. the sound was weak truck had no bass and with the windows down you could barely hear the radio. so the other day i was at a flea market and noticed some $20 pyramid tweeters. The dealer told me if i could install them up by my head in the door pillars so they would aim at me and the passenger. I bought them intalled them just above the grab handles on the door pillars. They are by far the best stereo upgrade i have done. I turned the treble way down and the bass up, and the stereo sounds great. I would recommend these to anyone with a standard cab tacoma. i just spliced them in with my door speaker wires, and they are awesome. took about one hour to install. best stereo mod i have done and also the cheapest.

I did the same thing...a custom set of 4" components in the dash with tweeters on the pillars, and a 6.5" component set in my custom-built pods in the doors...amazing imaging and clarity.

tweeters are definitely an awesome upgrade. I have an '03 that came with stock tweeters in the doors, but I upgraded those to some Lanzar silk dome tweeters. Took the door panels off and managed to mount them in the same spot as the stocks. Great upgrade over the stock tweeters even though the upgrades are not really high end. a buddy did the same thing with some titanium dome rockford fosgate tweets and I swear he could make ears bleed or windows shatter with them.

pyramid... eek!! i wouldn't expect them to last very long. they're about as entry level as you can get. glad you're satisfied though.

dude... as a poor collegel student, pyramids were the best i could afford... well for a while...

the amps were "noisy" as heck but their speakers took the abuse.

Dis my pyramids if you want but im not trying to impress anyone by spending all my cash on my stereo. lots of other things i want in life, for the price they are the best upgrade i have made to date. and if they dont last forever im sure i can get another set for $20 if necessary.

Anyone know what size the stock door tweeters are in '97? I swapped 6 3/4"ers for decent Pioneers, but I don't like the cheapy sound from the tweeters at all. Is there a standard size for those?

I think they are just 1". I upgraded mine, but I can't find the info for the tweeters I replaced them with. I will say that the factory mounting bracket won't fit a typical aftermarket tweeter. I had to bend and twist and cut and glue to get mine mounted behind the door panel in the stock location. On the other hand, the typical surface-mount fits into the factory grill location for a nice mounting option. The factory grill just pops out of the door panel once you get the whole panel off. I have seen this done with two different brands of surface-mountable tweeters, so I think the standard size for a 1" will fit. the downside to that is the factory tweeter grill is right on that part of the door panel where it begins to curve at the top and the aftermarket tweeter mounts are flat. So on the top of the surface mount tweeter it doesn't quite sit flush with the door panel. does that make sense?

I like them in the sails for that nice stock apperance:

i was gonna mount in the door sails, but im glad i diddnt. on the door pillar they are about 8"s from my head so even driving with the windows down i can hear the stereo great, and the angle from the pillars point them right at the driver and passengers head.

hey miles, where did you get those tweeter sails?

Not to answer for miles but you can make em or just use a hole saw and cut a hole in the stock covers and mount the tweeter directly to that.

Well said Chris. That's all I did. Just make use you have an agle mount for the tweater and it works great.
